This is absolutely correct keep the foot of the brake, keep those front wheels turning, e brake lock up your rear wheels put the thing in neutral and steer the vehicle where you want to go, you may find it fun.

Biggest problem these people are facing is they are braking…. once your wheels stop you loose ALL control, resist the urge to hit the brakes, if you do brake, tap it just a moment and immediately let go and try to gently turn the wheel and just try to make your way around the stopped cars… braking is your worst enemy on ice and slick roads.

Why are these dopes slamming their brakes… they have no control when their brakes are slammed… if they allow the tires to roll even they at least have some control to steer the car.

Also, why are they leaving their cars stacked in the spot where they crashed,… if they would move they wouldnt be in a spot to get more cars to smash into them… that Grey Saturn SUV has no reason to be stopped in that spot, move your car! It reminds me of the chinese in LA that get into a minor fender bender on the FWY and wont move their car until a police officer arrives… as if they have to maintain the integrity of the accident scene or something. STUPID!!

T-Bagg you are so right! I lived in New England my entire life before moving to Arizona. “Never” slam on the brakes when the road is icy. I learned that in my high school driver-ed class years ago and also from my late husband who made his living driving.

Most people choose to save money and they do not put proper snow tires with studs on their vehicles. Be it 4×4 or cars. They choose to risk the snow and ice. They say it wont happen to me. I own two sets of tires for my GMC 4×4 and Dodge Ramcharger 4×4. One set of all terrain and one set of studded snow tires. I never slide, slip or get stuck – oh yeah, I use common sense and drive within the road conditions.

I lived in Alaska through two winters. I nicked a brake line and went without brakes for a month one time. Watching this video you can tell that the idiots had one thing in common. They locked their wheels and had no control.
Just go slow and stay off the brakes. If you keep you tires cold (by not spinning them) you can keep enough control to go around obstructions.

We are not use to ice and snow much in AR and when we do get it, most of us do stay home and enjoy it from a nice warm livingroom and a wood fire if we are lucky. However, having said that, some have to go to work if they can manage to get there at all. Snow is usually not so bad to drive on, if you know how, but ice is another matter. No one can drive on ice safely. John Barrow Road is one road that you just can’t navigate in icy weather. I live near Hot Springs, AR but out in the country and side roads are the last to be cleared off. Folks have to understand that snow equipment is very expensive and not something that some states can afford to invest it for a once every 3 or 4 year experience. Our road dept. knows how to take care of it, it is just that they don’t have the equipment. Some people get out when they shouldn’t, and some get out because they MUST. My son got up, with his pickup loaded full of wood and drove 25 miles to work today because he has 10 people in his house right now and he HAD to go to work. Sometimes it isn’t a case of being stupid getting out in this stuff, it is a case of necessity, that is if you want to eat next week. So many people don’t know how to drive in snow. They drive to slow, or to fast, hit the brakes when they should stay off them, and then you have those idiots who have no clue how to drive in it that spin out or stop right in front of you, and if you stop, you are in the same situation they are in. That is why some folks just “kept going” after hitting another vehicle or being hit. The deal is, that they keep going till they get up the hill or down the hill to a “safe spot” more level, then stop and walk back, IF you can walk. Sometimes you can’t walk on it either. The video is just “business as usual” in weather like this. Best advise is to stay home if you can, and be careful if you have to get out in it. Don’t slam on your brakes, keep up a steady speed, and DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT follow a vehicle very closely. Give yourself plenty of stopping room or manuvering room. I see these idiots going down the highway, and someone is going slower than the speed limit due to conditions, and some NUT will get right behind them a car length away, and then expect to stop if the dude in the front car has to suddenly hit the brakes! Back off! If you don’t like the weather in AR, stick around a couple hours it will change. It is suppose to be 65 here on Sat.!!!!

Exactly Briphi, thats what I was thinking..let up off the brake people…notice the vehicles that did get through without wrecking kept their wheels moving…being from Ohio we drive in this stuff all the time..yes 4WD helps…but usually I send my wife and kids in the “tank” and I drive my work car an old Monte Carlo…tires with tread help…nobody uses chains except maybe trucks and not very often…yes people still wreck…and sorry to anonymous T but if a trooper can write down how many tickets you have had then perhaps you have too many tickets…the idea behind being ticketed for a wreck is that you go slow enough to maintain control next time…

I’m originally from Ohio too (Cleveland) currently living in AR. I drove thru blizzards up north without problem, but down here it’s different. They don’t have the equipment to clear the roads like they do up north; very few plows, no salt used, and if lucky they will sand the roads. The lay of the land is hilly with curves and we end up with a layer of black ice which is equal to a skating rink. Combine all of this and it’s an accident looking for a place to happen. Rule of thumb, run to Wally World, get milk, bread and eggs (ok, I can’t resist saying it), go home, stay inside, the snow/ice will be gone by tomorrow.

When conditions on the road change from clear to icy in an instant, it’s too late to slow down, even IF I was driving 15 mph under the posted limit and had a semi on my tail.
Yeah, I had a few tickets when I was younger, what do they have to do with the current one?
I’ve never had an officer write down past tickets on a ticket before. From what I heard, this OSP post is the Siberia of Ohio. the commander of this post is not a nice guy and has few friends in that town.
when the back of my jeep started to turn, I controlled it away from the oncoming cars.

For all you Global Warming Idiots:

Recent volcanic eruptions have caused more sulfur dioxide, carbon mono/dioxide, and airborne particulates than all the living things on planet earth have since the dawn of recorded history.

Mother earth recycles everything including the crust, so be happy that we will all be turned into oil for future generations to use in heating their homes when the weather turns cold.

So the cold weather is mother earth turning down the thermostat, stop your complaining and put a sweater on and put another log on the fire.

If you want perfect year round temperatures live on the moon. I prefer a planet run by fluid dynamics at all levels, from the core to the Ionosphere.

To me it is insane to think that all is good with the roads knowing that city, county and state highway departments can’t keep up with all the roads!! Seriously pray that folks really listen to the weather, even though they are generally wrong, but when it gets bad like this is it really worth it? Folks in LR knew this was headed their way!!!

Grew up in the central Arkansas area. Not going to make any bread or milk comments. Or any bad driver comments.

What I will say is that the weather this year is freaky. We never got snow like this while i was growing up. Something like this snowfall was a once ever three or four years event. Sure, we got yearly ice storms. But snow? Snow came every few years at best.

Now we have had snow once a week the last three weeks.

Thank you global warming for bringing the snow.

Large number of them do. The problem is, that experience is in mud.

What you really can’t tell from the video is the grade of the road. John Barrow, at it’s steepest, is upwards of an 8-10% grade. It’s one of those hills that, no matter how much experience a person thinks they have, it’s best to avoid or run with chains.

I was always told that when driving in unfamiliar conditions, such as snowfall, use your head and some common sense. I never had driven in snow before, and especially not like that shown in the video clip, so I will not claim anything other than that anyone able to do so is a pro in my book.

As others have posted, just having a 4×4 and experience in the mud is totally different than driving in conditions of snow and I imagine severe ice on the road as well.

Unbelievably slick. I wonder if Arkansas State troopers are d1cks, too and give out the “over $100 failure to control” tickets to them, like Ohio State Troopers do to people, in Ohio, who crash in the same conditions. I just crashed into a guard rail a couple of weeks ago on an unbelievably slick road and got a ticket for it. Even the OSP was spinning and sliding when he was parking to get out to survey the damage. He gave me less than a week to pay it and wrote down how many tickets I ever had on the ticket, the jack@$$..
These people don’t seem to understand that as long as your wheels are rolling, you have some control. Slamming on and holding the brakes does nothing.

4 wheel drive is great in this weather , but you still need to know HOW to drive it . Most don’t have a clue how to drive in winter weather .
Here’s some of my best tips take the car out of gear before hitting the brake , to start again apply the gas slowly , lower your speed before you need to stop . if you’er sliding
1.Take your foot off the accelerator. don’t brake
2.Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they’re sliding right, steer right.
3.If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.
My dad was a truck driver and my mom was a school bus driver , I learned from the best .
If you get stuck use your floor mats under you tires to get out .

I didn’t do it on purpose. It was a snowy day, I was driving 15 mph under the speed limit. The road was drivable until I got to a curve, where it was icy/snowy. The rear end of my AWD Jeep started to slide towards the inside of the curve, towards two oncoming cars. If I had not turned the way I did, two other people might have been hit, possibly killed. I didn’t need a “failure to control” ticket on top of the damage already done, since I pay the State to keep the roads free of ice and snow, anyway.
The police told me that he gives out “ FTC” tickets on a case by case basis. I guessing that if I was female and 20, I would not have gotten one.

Studded snow tires are permitted WITHOUT RESTRICTION in Arkansas from November 15 to April 15. If you have studded snow tires on your vehicle, you can go and stop on ice very well.
