‘You’re Not Going To Do This To Me!’ See What Happens When Barney Frank Is Called Out By a Reporter

If you ever get a chance to ask Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) about “Dodd-Frank,“ the finance ”reform” bill he co-authored with former Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT), watch out: he gets awfully snippy.

Actually, if you watch the following interview (as we have over and over and over), he’s pretty much always snippy.

CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo got to see for herself Rep. Frank’s, um, “pleasant” disposition during a Thursday interview while the two discussed former Citi chair Sandy Weill’s call to break up the banks, the U.S.’ impending “fiscal cliff,“ and ”Dodd-Frank.

The entire segment is definitely worth a watch [but it gets really interesting at the 09:00 mark]:

When Barney doesn’t know the answer, he just keeps right on talking. Possibly what he said could be translated by Maxine Waters. She is another genius on the House Banking Committee.

William Lutz provides several defining attributes of doublespeak:

      misleads
      distorts reality
      pretends to communicate
      makes the bad seem good
      avoids or shifts responsibility
      makes the negative appear positive
creates a false verbal map of the world
limits, conceals, corrupts, and prevents thought
makes the unpleasant appear attractive or tolerable
creates incongruity between reality and what is said or not said

Is it possible to get elected to congress, get on the banking committee and completely fake it and talk out of your a@$ the entire time? The answer is clearly yes. These people make our laws and regulations and we allow morons in the door without so much as a questionnaire.
I think congress needs an entrance exam (before you are put on the ballot). I also think to get on a committee, you must pass another exam showing some proficiency in the appropriate area. You can study, you don’t have to be a genius. Geez, this guy….wow.

RAMBO…in 2001 the Bush administration began taking moves to bring Fannie under congressional scrutiny. Democrats like Frank blocked it in committee and then we had the 9/11 attack which took Bush’s attention away from that matter.

In 2005 the same measure was brought up in the senate with McCain putting his name to the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005. S. 190.
He stated: “I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.”….History proved McCain right.

The measure never made it out of committee. Chris Dodd, the then ranking member of the Banking Committee and later it’s chair, was in the middle of receiving preferential loan treatment from Countrywide, one of the companies gaming the system in the credit crisis. Barack Obama took hundreds of thousands of dollars from the lobbyists McCain mentions in the same speech which made him number 2 in getting money from these entities. Barney Frank as a committee member continued to deny any problems with Fannie and stonewalled any investigation into it.
Frank is really one of the most disgusting individuals soiling congress today.

Well hang on, I’m not so sure.

If I was closer to Mr Frank’s ideology, I might have been persuaded. He made some cogent points which we would be better to concentrate on and analyse, rather than write the whole thing off because he bluntly expressed his annoyance.

And with regard to that, he had some justification. The interviewer employed a “bait and switch” a couple of times and was (rather roughly) pulled up. On that, I would let Mr Frank have a pass.

An interviewer should not play a clip on one topic and then come back to the interviewee with a somewhat unrelated question, denying him a defence. Do we want to know Mr Frank’s response to Mr Ryan? I think we do.

While I do not think that Dodd/Frank is good law on its own merits, there are some thought-provoking points in it. Mr Frank mentioned one of them, which effectively would allow the bank to fail but would step in to pay some of its bills if it was judged that the effect would unreasonably snowball downhill.

I don’t agree with that because someone has to judge who gets paid and that in itself brings problems, but that should be our focus, not chiding him for being irritable.

      Posted on July 27, 2012 at 1:31am

Made some good points? What? Where? We already have bankruptcy laws to handle a failed bank. And yes a judge decides who gets paid based on LAW. But because Glass Stegal was repealed, which is a firewall between deposits and high risk investments, there is no orderly bank failure. The Volker rule is a shoddy, vague attempt to protect customer deposits from risky investments. As was pointed out by Bartiromo it is not clearly defined in the Dodd Frank bill. Glass stegal should be reenacted. One bank with different divisions of both savings and loan and investment is stupid. Wall them off as separate companies and bank failures will be rare let alone MF Global debacles. The Volker rule, as not defined by Frank, try’s to tell banks what kinds of investments are to risky. Extremely vague.
Frank is dangerously stupid. Fair points my….

I didn’t say that I agreed with the example that I gave, in fact just the opposite. The point that I was trying to make was that the whole interview was being written off because of Mr Franl’s irritable demeanour.

If one is not willing to listen to the opposing view, or prematurely decide that it’s wrong, then one may be lead into error. You may have already studied it, but I hadn’t, so I was new to the detail. It seemed to me that everyone was ignoring the subject matter in favour of criticising his understandable annoyance.

Perhaps you might read Sun Tzu, to understand the importance of knowing your enemy as well as yourself.

Let’s see here. Clinton had it in for CEOs and following some of the foolishness Nixon tried, he ordered that CEOs were to receive no more than one million a year in payment. This started to stock options where the companies offered near unlimited amounts of their stock to their CEOs as additional payment. Then….what was it that was happening at that time? Oh yeah, the Dot Com boom. Like any new thing such as Beta and VHZ things will narrow down to the most popular or most successful while the perceived flawed items will join the dinosaurs of history. That’s what happened with the Dot Com bubble bust….and all of those stock options presented problems. All caused by Clinton’s class envy. Then lo and behold the same man who had never owned a home in his entire life decided that he knew more than all of the tried and true real estate businessmen, and the mortgage bankers. It was just so unfair that those who could not afford to buy a house should be able to buy a house after all. Naturally houses they could never, ever afford nor pay for. But, banks and other mortgage lenders were ordered to make these loans anyway. And, as the man responsible departs the White House, you lefties had Bush to blame for the real mess that Clinton got started with a mere snowball that began to build speed as it rolled down that mountain. Keep blaming Bush if you wish. But, do we really want the government going beyond all regulations and just running the banks. I don’t regardless which part

However..in 2005 the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act was taken up again with people like John McCain adding their names to it.
Chris Dodd then Banking committee ranking member and later it’s head blocked the measure. Dodd was receiving preferrential treatment from Countrywide at the time. The big bully….congress which be a much more hospitable place once he is gone. Another leftist liar who can look at a tape of himself lying and then turn to the interviewer and deny he said what everyone just saw. He more than anyone is responsible for the financial crash of ‘08 by squashing any investigation and oversight of freddie, fannie, and the mortgage industy.
