‘You’re Simpletons’: PA Gov. Rendell ‘Loses His Cool’ During ‘60 Minutes’ Interview

PHILADELPHIA – Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell‘s infamous temper flared up on Sunday night’s “60 Minutes.”
Rendell lashed out at reporter Leslie Stahl, who questioned the effect of legalized slot-machine gambling in Pennsylvania on gambling addicts.
“They’re not losing their paychecks because Pennsylvania instituted gaming. Those people were losing their paychecks in Atlantic City, in Delaware at the racetracks or in West Virginia.”
“So, why not lose it here, that‘s what you’re saying,” Stahl said.
“Well, if they’re going to lose it anyway, let’s get the upside,” Rendell said.
Later, Rendell told Stahl, “You’re a very smart person.”
“But not now. I’m dumb now,” Stahl said, laughing.
“You’re not getting it,” answered Rendell. “Those people would lose that money anyway. Don’t you understand?”
When Rendell was pressed on that point, he snapped at Stahl, “You guys don’t get that,” gritting his teeth and chopping through the air with both hands head-high. “You’re simpletons. You‘re idiots if you don’t get that.”

Posted on January 11, 2011 at 3:22pmIts SIMPLE people…states gather revenue through alcohol, tobacco, and gaming(lottery) sales right? RIGHT, are either of those things illegal? NO, so if the slot machines are legal they are going to be taxed and revenue will collected by the state. If you don’t like it, don’t gamble, don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t buy lottery tickets.

Posted on January 11, 2011 at 3:42pmsorry million have to disagree with your viewpoint. This view is not to help someone out of a destructive, harmful addiction but to exploit them even more. This isn’t an issue on gambling but the issue were on those that are addicted. Compulsion is not as simple as just don’t do it. Same for smoking drinking, etc….I’m sure if you had one of these addictions you would want your fellow man to help you not shake you down for more!!!!

Posted on January 11, 2011 at 4:13pmI have always thought of myself as a conservative. I think now that I may be more of a libertarian. If someone wants to spend all their money on gambling, let them. That person may have an addiction problem. People with addictive personalities will find a way to destroy themselves regardless of how many freedoms you take away from them. Taking away someones freedoms “for their own good” is a modern liberal tactic. It was also a way for state religious run countries to control the people “for their own good”. You can be moral, believe in God, be patriotic and still respect other peoples freedoms.

Here is the Basic Test
1> Do feel a person should be able to do anything they want, but not be allowed to make any money doing it, and if they make money then it should only be just enough to live on everything else should go towards supporting the common good?
Then your a Progressive
2> Do you think you should be able to make as much money as you want, but can only spend it on government approved activities?
Then your a Conservative
3> Do you think you should be able to make as much money as your want AND do anything you want (aside from fraud or physically harming another person or property) including drugs, gambling, and other “sinful” activities
Then your a Freedom Loving true American Libertarian that our founding fathers would be proud of

I’m not a gambling addict, nor do I gamble, but I should have the right to do what I want with the money I work for. Its none of your business were I spend it. So please get off your high horse and actually hear what the constitution has to say! It just amazes me how all these so called conservatives still want to pick and choose what the Constitution says!

Report Post »I agree with you whole heartedly about the fact that if YOU go to work every morning and bust YOUR butt for YOUR money YOU should be able to do what YOU wish with it. Even being the Simpleton I have been told I am, I get that! The problem comes in when the so called “officials” can’t have a debate over what is best for the state. They can’t argue or defend their position or hear another point of view. If you don’t agree with their logic you are a “simpleton”. I personally have no problem with a state that I don’t live in having gambling or not. As long as they are not spending my money than THE PEOPLE of that state should decide what is best for them.
What I do have a problem with is this typical Dem/Lib mentality that I am seeing way too often. Don’t discuss the facts or have a debate after all your a politician, you know what the people need more than they do. Why have a fact based debate with “simpletons”? It is the same mentality we saw with Obamacare. ” It doesn’t matter what the people want. We are politicians and know what is best! After all they are just a bunch of Simpletons” SCREW THAT!

I believe both gambling and prostitution should be legal for one simple reason: FREEDOM. We should not have to live by yours or anyone elses morals but our own, and if someone feels like gambling, or buying a ******, let them do it. It doesnt hurt anyone. You may make the arguement for “the kids”, or “his family”, but arent you guys supposed to be for personal responsibility? Lets have some and actually have FREEDOM in this country. Posted on January 13, 2011 at 3:19pmSorry, but I don’t get this attitude from anyone but a liberal. People are responsible for their own actions. If they want to gamble, then that is THEIR problem, not mine. As someone who now has a job in a casino(that pays more than any job I’ve ever had), I find casinos to be a blessing. A good chunk of the patrons I see everyday are folks that play for a living. I’m sure they find it to be a blessing as well.
Yes, there are people that lose their money in the process. People that play the lottery end up spending way more than they make as well in general. But for some, the big win is a massive blessing.
Just because /you/ feel sorry for Joe Schmo who decides to blow the money they cannot afford on gambling doesn’t mean anyone else cares. If I choose to smoke, drink, gamble, or whatever else, that is MY choice. I don’t expect anyone to feel sorry for me or come running to my aid. As such, I DON’T do any of those things. Nobody is going to rescue me from myself so I choose not to participate in those things.

Report Post »By that logic I could say, “Hey, that mass murderer was going to get his machine gun somewhere. He might as well buy it from me. At least then I get some money for it. That’s the upside.”
Not even amoral, it’s immoral.

Liberalism is a mental illness. They all belong in the loony bin with Loughner.

Posted on January 12, 2011 at 5:38amFrankly, I take my hat off to Leslie Stahl. She is keenly aware of the inhumanity shown by Ed Rendel’s statement and dumbass Ed Rendel does not. I bet Ed Rendel lost a lot of his political mojo in that interview.

Posted on January 12, 2011 at 12:24pm@Oldguy49..Slot machine gambling is legal in Florida. In fact, I work at a casino that has slot maching gaming. The truth is that gambling should be legal everywhere. What you do with your money is up to you as long as you dont physically harm someone else. Why should our government decide what morals should be upheld? Prostitution should be legal as well. To each his own. Let freedom reign! As long as no-one is getting hurt its ok with me.

Posted on January 13, 2011 at 6:29amGive PA all your money. The Gov needs your money. And he will do anything to get more money. Like destroy the forests with natural gas drilling, gambling and hey! why not legalize all drug activity?

Posted on January 13, 2011 at 11:58am7.62… It’s not the issue of “to gamble or NOT to gamle” in Penn. or any other state… the POINT is his attitude with those who disagree with him. He is an Elitist and views all people who disagree with him as Dunces or worse, SIMPLETONS and IDIOTS.

Posted on January 13, 2011 at 1:08pmIsnt making gambling illegal a socially progressive thing to do, which may coincide with the conservative viewpoint. But I dont see how legalizing gambling is progressive, id see it as libertian, less government, and let people have freedom and excercise personal responsibility.
Report Post »I mean some people will get obese, you can make colesterol illegal, that would be progressive.
Im not saying i like this guy overall or the way he argues and the arguements he uses, but i see this as an anti-progressive move… I dont know, surely debatable

Posted on January 13, 2011 at 7:49pmOh the irony. A Libertarian viewpoint from a Progressive. Would he apply the same standard to cigarrettes, transfats, alcohol, seat belts..Etc, etc. I think we all know the answer. He didn’t mention online gambling or Indian Casinos but he might as well. His point is correct. His reasons are what is despicable. Leslie Stahl is so smug and self righteous I don’t blame him for losing his temper.
