‘You’ve Damaged Your Own Race’: Philly Mayor Blasts Teens, Flash Mobs

“You’ve damaged yourself, you’ve damaged another person, you’ve damaged your peers and, quite honestly, you’ve damaged your own race,” Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said in a fiery address before his congregation Sunday. “You damaged your own race.”

Nutter, who is African American, targeted so-called flash mobs of black youths who’ve been caught on video attacking people in downtown Philadelphia. “If you want…anybody else to respect you and not be afraid when they see you walking down the street,” he said from the pulpit at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, “then leave the innocent people who are walking down the street minding their own damn business. Leave them alone.”

Nutter’s chastisements—which didn’t spare parents, either—included:

  • “Take those God darn hoodies down, especially in the summer. Pull your pants up and buy a belt ’cause no one wants to see your underwear or the crack of your butt. Nobody.”
  • “If you walk into somebody’s office with your hair uncombed and a pick in the back, and your shoes untied, and your pants half down, tattoos up and down your arms and on your neck, and you wonder why somebody won’t hire you? They don’t hire you ’cause you look like you’re crazy!”
  • “The Immaculate Conception of our Lord Jesus Christ took place a long time ago, and it didn’t happen here in Philadelphia. So every one of these kids has two parents who were around and participating at the time. They need to be around now.”
  • “Parents who neglect their children, who don’t know where they are, who don‘t know what they’re doing, who don‘t know who they’re hanging out with, you’re going to find yourself spending some quality time with your kids in jail.”
  • To fathers: “If you’re not providing the guidance,and you’re not sending any money, you’re just a sperm donor.”
Nutter announced yesterday that the certain areas of center city Philadelphia are now off limits to minors after 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. As for the rest of the city, the curfew remains 10 p.m. if you’re under 13; midnight if you’re under 18.

      God Bless you Mayor Nutter. The poor children have such horrible roll models to look up to. They think if they can show their butts and talk like a rapper they might get noticed. Doesn’t work that way.
      Your speech is what they needed to hear and hopefully their parents will start trying to be real parents to these kids and send them to church to learn the right way. Be families again, eat together. love each other and stop having babies if you don’t want to raise them in the right way.       Agree with Michael–many could heed the advice. But also understand what the mayor is saying, the flash mobs have been a problem, and unfortunately, our political atmosphere has emboldened them to do what they do. He understands what many do not or will not—-racial divisions are often a CHOICE. Let’s quit letting the politicians tell us who to hate and why. And if you choose to do it outside of that, it’s your own personal choice but acting on it is consequences you also chose for yourself.

      Someone needs to investigate if the SEIU is behind the attacks in Wisconsin. How did upwards of 300 black youths get to the state fair – someone arranged transportation. I hope Governor Walker launches an investigation into this.       Huh? You think it’s abnormal for 300 black youths to attend a state fair that has 10s of thousands of people attending? I know some people want to blame SEIU, but this could be about these black youths belief that “whitey” is causing their problems.       I love it when the few and far between blacks stand up and talk this way.
      It gives me hope that racism among blacks may not be forever.
      Listen, there are plenty of whites with racist issues, but blacks keep racism alive with their own actions, beliefs, etc. This kind of talk from a leader in his own community is what will help strike down the divide between our races. There are a lot of whites that are tired of the divide but there’s nothing we can do when many leaders in the black community continue to drive that wedge, influencing their own.       It is so refreshing to here the truth from a honorable black American. I have always said that there was never any thing wrong with the average American people. ( Black or White)
      There are elected officials in Washington that want to keep the race card going for their own professional careers. Washington has been lying to them for years. I would like for them to just take a minute and think about their lives, has any politician ever keep their promises to make their lives better. How much better has their lives gotten since they elected the so called life changing president? These very kids have been denied educations by these elected officials, which has keep them in the streets. They talk the talk, but they don’t walk the walk. Their anger has been drilled into them by the media and the radicals for years. These progressive politicians have been using them by walking around and stirring up the youth. They have always created these crisis so that they could take advantage of them. These riots are another divergence to take the peoples mind off what is really doing on in Washington.

      Sad but he’s right. This is one of the reasons why I believe an Allen West presidency would do this country so much good. For one… Black youth would have a Black man to look up to that they can really be proud of.     I like your speech Mr. nutter, but you think a curfew will stop the problem? It is your liberal agenda that has caused this… a breakdown of families. Mr. Nutter, I live 20 minutes from center city and I no longer go into the city unless I absolutely have to. I will not let my 20 year daughter go in the city either. There is a break down in the family unit that politics has caused.
    Last, my son went on a mission trip into Philadelphia a few months ago and he said through out the day and night he would hear gun fire. He also said children of ALL ages run around unsupervised. Their parents strung out on drugs and not working because they expect their government checks. Yes sir, we have a family breakdown problem and a 15 minute sermon will not stop this senseless violence. Stop sending the checks, let Churches get involved and reward morals and values and stop rewarding bad behavior!

      While I agree with your assessment, I do not share in the hope for the Black community. Like most everyone else on the site you are cheering for the progress and reform of the Black community. I would love to see it as well but it is not going to happen. It’s genetics. You will never change them. They are who they are as a result of tens of thousands of years of evolution and while the local church may help, the eventual outcome will still be the same. Yes there are indeed many thousands of Blacks that are of high intellect and outstanding integrity but you must consider the race as a whole not the upper echelon of it. One has to look no further than Haiti to understand. That is if you truly want to understand. In the end the upper echelon does not set the standard when it comes to morality and values, the averages do.

Can’t have it both ways, there’s nothing genetic about it the problem is environmental. The problem is we were all told 20-30 years ago that the environmental problem was the surroundings kept minorities from helping themselves and getting out of ghettos. Environmental, to me anyway, means minorities are being raised in an environment that teaches them they can’t help themselves, the government has to do it for them and they need just apply.

      I can agree with that but many fail to understand that culture is simply a derivative of Race when you get right down to it. Or put another way there’s no bigger contributor to culture than Race. I realize that red flags go up with many Christians right about now but it will simply require some thinking.

      Let me try to help with this little analogy. Consider Iceland and Haiti. I assume that everyone will know the history of the two. What would happen if the people of the two Nations were transposed? I suppose one could still argue that it comes down to culture but I would simply contend that there’s no bigger contributor to culture than the racial makeup of the people.

      Where am I wrong?

      @ TECHENGINEER – Shall we compare the Goths and Visigoths to the Greeks and Romans? They all were of indo-european descent but the Greeks and Romans developed civlizations predicated on philosophy and reason. They were all military based cultures but the Greeks and Romans tried to rise above tribalism and bring their cultures to other people whereas the Goths and Visigoths only wanted booty and did nothing to raise other cultures to a higher level. No, ie’s not a racial thing it is cultural and those who raise the cuktural level of others fing that all races are capable of general improvement.

      Even ghetto life can harbor high culture. All that’s needed is a foundation of morality which teaches personal responsibility for both sin and goodworks. With a sound moral basis any culture will rise to higher levels.

      It is simply a matter of seeing the advantage of rising above our instincts and realizing the value of reason. It’s what sets all of the races of man above the animals.

      So we should expect to see at least one thriving morally sophisticated and civilized African nation today then right? Or ever for that matter. Explain that please and while you’re at it explain why some of the latest Crime stats depict Blacks making up less than 15% of the population committing over 50% of the violent crime in America. Maybe we need to spend more money on education or welfare? No you’re very reasonable so I won’t patronize you. You are right in theory but practice has shown that it’s just not working and while I know it sounds ugly our people deserve better than what they are currently getting in this multicultural society. I just really don’t believe that most understand or realize how prevalent interracial crime is in America.

      The issue isn’t race – it’s trust. Until conservative black leaders finally stop the lies of liberals leaders, this issue will continue.       If only more would, but they get written off as Uncle Toms, by activists such as Sharpton and Jackson, who NEED poor, uneducated, excuses to be used as victims to further their agenda and line their pockets.

    Amen….about time someone in the black community said these things. One problem though, won’t white, Asian or Hispanic kids start blaming the black kids. Black kids caused a tighter curfew, and regulations restricting entrance to kids of a certain age, during certain hours, without a parent or guardian. If I was 16 right now I’d be looking for a black flash mobber to personally thank him.

      All kids are punished because a certain race’s kids are acting like animals. Doesn’t seem fair to me.
      Wisconsin State Fair attendance is down thanks to last Thursday’s beat up whitey party. Teens were also let go from jobs at the fair, or not called in, because of lower attendance. So not only other teens get punished, but owners of those business are punished, with less traffic, because of those black teens.
      Some of those small fair businesses have been there for years. They pay high property taxes for small buildings on the fair grounds, with only the 10 day State Fair to make their money.
      Everybody loses thank to one race.

      Overall, thats the progressive way – to destroy families and any male role models that are out there. Women can be role models – but I don’t think very good ones to boys/men – and look at what your average mother does “my child didn’t do that” – “your child did that” – your kids to blame etc etc etc – my child is a angel.

      seems to me that the article stated he called out parents also (meaning both mom and dad) he did call out fathers specifically too, but I wud think he wud do that because the black community has a very high rate of single moms, not single dads. but yes mothers can b terrible parents too.

      99% of the time, it’s the men who DO the neglect. Fathering kids as if they’re just a notch on the belt missing from the pants drooping off of their butts. Yes, the moms may not be perfect but I bet most of them are doing the best they can – but young boys need their dads in the picture too. So…in that sense, the moms are guilty of neglect as well. Having kids when you know the father won’t be there is the same as putting a pistol to your heart and pulling the trigger. THIS is what 50 years of the Great Society has done to the people it claimed it was going to help.

      Funny, but when blacks weren’t being helped so darn much by the gummint they were far better off.
