‘Yuck!’: Senate Candidate Uses Adorable 5-Year-Old to Give Economics Lesson

Hudson Hinckley is only five years old, but he has a message for the voters of Rhode Island. Actually, he has several of them.

Hudson is the son of Rhode Island U.S. Senate candidate Barry Hinckley, and he’s now the star of a new campaign ad that could certainly go viral. In the ad, dubbed “Hudson Hinckley’s Economics 4 5-Year-Olds,” Hudson bemoans rising gas prices, ballooning debt, and unemployment. He uses a giant notepad, a few markers, and amazingly refined 5-year-old diction to deliver his message: “Tell your mom and your dad to vote for my dad, Barry Hinckley, ’cause he’s going to balance the budgets.”

Senate Candidate Barry Hinckley Uses Son Hudson in Ad

But that’s not all he says.

“You know the gas my mom uses to bring me to school? It’s a lot more expenses now. … This is real bad.”

What does he have to say about the national debt? “Yuck!”

Senate Candidate Barry Hinckley Uses Son Hudson in Ad

Unemployment? Again, “this is real bad.”

Senate Candidate Barry Hinckley Uses Son Hudson in Ad

“Five-year-olds, are you better off now than you were five years ago?”

You can watch the ad below:

By the way, we’ve done stories about liberals using their children to score political points in the past, so it’s worth asking the question: Are you okay with this? Is this different than using a child to ask a politician a question at a town hall? Weigh in.

That little boy is adorable!! I thought the ad was very clever; it got the point across without being harshly negative…a real plus these days. My daughter was always interested in politics, even at a young age. (Maybe not so much at 5, lol…but definietely by 11) She is now on a committee in her hometown. The mayor has even offered to support her in a Mayoral electionin two more years, as he will be stepping down. I’ll bet this little fellow grows up much more enlightened than his peers, as it seems that his parents have educated him on some of the basics. Yes, it took a lot of “takes”, but what 5 yr old can whip through such big words and concepts straight out. If I were in RI, I would SO vote for this man, and I’d love to attend any fundraiser he had….as long as his son was there, also, lol.

      National Debt?
      Gas Prices?
      Unemployment?

Sounds like the same three things ever Right affiliated pundit is saying… now why would that be? Wouldn’t it be funny if there were some memo going around instructing conservatives on what to talk about? That would be funny…

      oh wait, here it is:

Still funny that this “not career politician” is playing the game to the T. And if a Progressive candidate were to do this same thing (using a child to send a message) I’m sure we would all be crying “INDOCTRINATION!!!” … but what‘s good for the goose isn’t always what’s good for the gander, right?

Very illuminating like most GOP candidates they focus on a select group of indicators, provide no historical tie back to Bush and provide no real solutions. Anybody can be an art critic. It took 24 years for the stock market to return to pre depression levels. Bush left us with the worst economic downturn since the depression and everyone wonders why it isn’t all better in 3 years. In June of ‘08 gas was ant $4.10 per gallon and reached its highest level ever under Bush. And the momo’s who want to go to war with Iran think that will bring down the price. How about limiting speculators who only buy oil to make a quick buck and even by the Heritage Foundations figures increase the cost of gasoline by $.70 a gallon. Only actual users of oil or gas should be able to purchase oil or futures in the market. The free market for oil is obviously not operating as a free market when it is being driven in wild swings by speculators. And speculators are not capitalists by any sense of the term. They are gamblers pure and simple. They produce nothing and add no value to the economy or society. The money being made and lost in speculation would be better directed towards investment in productive pursuits.

      Hey Rook,

You failed to mention that when GWB handed over the reigns to BHO, the average price per gallon was about $1.61, and has been on a steady climb ever since.

And once again, you seem to be displaying a bit of moral outrage over something that is legal.

What do you know about speculators? The oil users lock in a specific acceptable price by passing the risks of future price swings on to nonuser speculators. The transaction creates a market.

Well, I disagree with most people here.

He seems a nice bright little guy and his parents must be proud of him. But he is five. He was coached.

It distresses me when children are forced into the frontline of politics. They cannot possibly have any idea about what they are doing and those responsible are cynically using them as an emotive tool to push their own agenda. The fact that I agree with this particular agenda is irrelevant.

It happens all too often. The worst thing that I have ever seen is a mother making her small child stand on railway tracks in front of a moving train (I can‘t remember what the point was and I don’t care). and then there are five and six year old “pastors” leading revival type congregations.

I wish that people would leave their children out of politics, would not put them on the front lines of demonstrations, and realise that there are more important things in life than their own opinions.

What does anybody say about despots in the Middle East using children as human shields in armed conflict?

This is considerably more benign, but its not different.

It is a great state overall but politically it is full of crooks and bad politician after bad politician and it seems that in order to win an election here in RI, you have to be a liberal who is only in it for himself. Don’t get me wrong, there are some, not many, but some great politicians that look out for everyone and have the best interest of the state their number one priority. I believe Hinckley is one of those candidates and if he wins he can help RI turn the corner. but overall, it is full of a bunch of liberals that are ruining the state

First of all, nobody here wants to vote for any sort of Bush in 12, so your sarcastic moniker is wasted on us.

Second, if everything the kid says is factual, then there is no indoctrination, only truth.

Third, if you think the Republicans have no solutions to these problems and your beloved Democrats do, then you are a complete moron. If you know the Democrats don’t have the solutions and are actually making matters worse, but you support them anyway, then you are a traitor.

      @TRUTHURTS

First of all, you can’t possibly speak on behalf of everyone on this site.

Second of all, “if everything the kid says is factual, then there is no indoctrination, only truth.” Regardless of the accuracy of what the kid is saying, do you think the child knows what he is saying? No.

In any case, the kid is not telling the whole truth. As I pointed out elsewhere, nearly half of the kids life (during which time thinks supposedly got so much worse) was spent during the Bush administration. The poorly drawn graphs even reflect the fats that all these negatives were on the rise BEORE Obama took office. Hence, it makes no sense to blame Obama for everything.

LASTLY, though I could go on all day, the gas prices aren’t NEARLY as high as they were in 2007-2008. A time period that can’t possibly be attributed to Obama who had just taken office towards the end of that period.

And unlike this stupid video, I will provide my sources:
      http://zfacts.com/p/35.html

So the short answer is Yes – it’s indoctrination. I‘m not saying I’m against the exploitation of kids for personal gain, I just want a little consistency from the Right [for once].

They have a 7.2 Billion$ unfunded pension liability, Courtesy of 7 decades of unfettered progressive democratic rule.
11.5% unemployment as a result. They also enjoy the highest property taxes as a result of each town supporting one working and two retired Fire Depts, Police Depts and School Systems. You can retire @ 45years old in most cases and collect a pention with cost of living increases and free Blue Cross for life. Did I mention that most retire on a disability and get the hell out of here.

Open borders with free entitlement for all illegals. Food Stamps, Housing and heat assistance.

RI also has the most progressive Governor in the country. ( you remember, Chafee, that “republican” senator who never voted with his party. He was elected because two conservatives split the vote coupled with the fact that ignorant voters remember his Father, a great man).
Chaffee implemented Crushing taxes that has chased an unbelievable amount of businesses out, and has residents shopping out of state for their durable and non-durable items.
Plus RI is big into removing “God” from the schools and State House. Remember the Holiday Tree last Christmas and the “prayer” removed from Cranston High School that offended a17 year old atheist? Thank you progressives & ACLU.
I don’t know the actual number, but I imagine Rhode Island now has more people in the “cart” then are pushing it.

There is a big difference in truth, ideology and idol worship for obama. This is a very broad spectrum. No cool-aid should be taught to kids period. Its mental child abuse when they have to defend a wrong and not popular opinion that belonged to someone else. Let them grow up and learn to decipher right and wrong and what they like or not like. Let them be kids first and grow into their own personalities. These kids do have a right to a future.

Are you referring to the numbers in the video? I can’t comment on their accuracy, but I CAN comment on the fact that 2 of Hudson‘s 5 years of life were lived during the Bush administration so he can’t legitimately blame Obama for everything.

Additionally, none of those graphs are scaled, legitimate statistical figures, nor do they follow the basic rules of graph making.

I thought it was adorable. I don’t see anything wrong with this. The child is smart to be able to memorize the what I will call a skit….and maybe he is learning why his dad is doing what he is doing….there is caring between them and this is supportive family interaction. I think this is okay. There were no lies in this and no harm in this particular ad. I did however, find the kid who went up to Michele Bachmann with the prompting of his gay mother wrong as the kid clearly looked uncomfortable and was clearly being used. This kid did not seem to feel uncomfortable and seemed more to be a kid educated on what his dad is doing and why. The other kid going up to Michele Bachman was not comfortable in what he was doing and it showed. There are different kinds of use if you will. If you use your kids in an ad to support their dad and they enjoy this activity as part of a loving interaction of family it is okay with me but if you use your kids or force them into something it seems wrong. The judgement for me is in how appropriate is it for the child and if the child seems to be okay with it. This child seems to understand the reasons his dad is running for office or at least it was explained to him in a way that was fun and educational because he enjoyed his little skit!
