Yvonne the German Cow Turns Herself in After Three Months on the Run

Last week The Blaze reported that Yvonne — a cow that escaped slaughter and was on the run in the Germany for three months — was still at large. Well, the search for the renegade cow ended anticlimactically: she essentially turned herself in .

Over the weekend, authorities suspended the search for Yvonne until October. Yvonne must have sensed when she was off the hook and moseyed onto a farmer’s land. The farmer turned her over to the Gut Aiderbichl animal sanctuary where she’s now munching peacefully on her cud. The Guardian shares some background:

Having been fattened up for slaughter, the six-year-old brown dairy cow escaped from her field in the village of Zangberg, 50 miles north-east of Munich, on 24 May. She managed to breach the electric fence surrounding her farm before seeking sanctuary in nearby forests. She led a quiet life grazing among the fir trees until she was nearly involved in a collision with a passing police car.

Following her escape the cow became, in the words of one newspaper, “a kind of freedom fighter for the animal loving German republic”. As word of her escapades spread, animal protection activists got involved, incensed that local hunters had been given permission to shoot Yvonne on sight. Gut Aiderbichl, an animal sanctuary over the Austrian border in Salzburg, agreed to buy Yvonne from the farm for €600.

According to AP, the cow “apparently got tired of the loneliness,” the local council in Muehldorf said in a statement. The Guardian also reports that Yvonne’s pasture will have a paddock.

Her Facebook friends wish her well: “I hope they treat you like the princess that you are.”

The enchated black forest released her to freedom. Some here I believe mentioned that you have to draw the line w.r.t. and animal being either food or family when you choose to give an animal a name. Good that she will be able to graze to greener and safer pastures the remaining part of her life. You go mooo girl. :)

I hope Yvonne has many blissful days grazing and enjoying her freedom…I was going to be sick if they slaughtered her, after her magnificent escape from being hamburgers!

Are you kidding? She went dry months ago. She most likely stopped giving enough milk. That is why she was going to slaughter. Perhaps she wanted the salt lick the other farmer had.

Six years old is old for beef meet. She was destined to be Bologna. I guess she still is.

This is funny, I don’t care who you are. Or, at least is should be. It’s nice to read something like this, just to have a break from the doom and gloom of reality.

for all the comments you guys make about killing this animal I doubt that any of you have the huevos to do the dead with a knife and watch it. I doubt if any animal thought it was a good idea to get butchered for your table.

Maybe her milk was recalled by the government?

She is asking for asylum in America. She wants to be one of those California ”happy cows” she saw on the commercials. Only problem with her plan is the California officials will confiscate her milk there too……….What is a cow to do?

      @ Rational
No, man! The real problem is that she is from a Eurpean country, and her linage can be traced back generations. Now, if she was some mutt that was confused as to the meaning of “father’s day”, Janet Incomiptano herself would be commiting resources, (on humintarian grounds) to import the old heifer here- and place her with a foster herd!!
