Zuccotti Park ‘Re-Occupied’ (or Is It Just a St. Patrick’s Day Party?)

UPDATE: The six month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement culminated Saturday night with more than 100 NYPD officers clearing Zuccotti Park of demonstrators at around 11:30 p.m. Police say 73 people were detained in the clash. Updated story and video below.

The warm weather seems to have brought life back to the Occupy Wall Street movement.

OWS Returns to Zuccotti

Screen Cap from tonight's re-occupation of Zuccotti Park

Earlier tonight, Zuccotti Park filled to capacity with occupiers participating in a large General Assembly filled with announcements about OWS and their upcoming events like:

  • A May Day event.
  • Training for “Clowning On The Streets” – This was explained as something that is meant to embarrass the police on the streets by doing something called “breaking the binary.”
  • Assorted upcoming training sessions for the “springtime return of Occupy Wall Street”

Several of the “mic check” speakers announced that this was a spontaneous gathering to celebrate the “birthday” of Occupy Wall Street. However, for a spontaneous event, there was significant OWS media presence and “facilitating teams” were on hand. There was also talk that Michael Moore had set up a webcast.

There was also a refresher course in the OWS hand signal communications. (If this is new to you, here’s a study guide from boingboing.net)

OWS Returns to Zuccotti

Since the re-occupation is allegedly only a 24-Hour event, you might want to take a look at the live stream here.

We will monitor and update as we gather new information.

(AP) – Protesters marking the six-month mark since the start of the Occupy movement were taken into custody by police officers who poured into the park after warning those who had gathered there that it was closed.

Police said 73 people were detained. It was unclear how many were still in custody Sunday afternoon.

Some demonstrators had locked arms and sat down in the middle of Zuccotti

Zuccotti Park cleaned Sunday Morning after arrests Saturday night (AP)

Park near Wall Street after police announced on a bullhorn at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday that the park was closed. Officers then entered the park, forcing out most of the crowd and surrounding a small group that stayed behind. Police formed a human ring around the park to keep protesters out.

An unused public transit bus was brought in to cart away about a dozen demonstrators in plastic handcuffs. One female under arrest had difficulty breathing and was taken away in an ambulance to be treated.

For hours, the demonstrators had been chanting and holding impromptu meetings in the park to celebrate the anniversary of the movement that has brought attention to economic inequality, as police mainly kept their distance.

But New York Police Det. Brian Sessa said the tipping point came when the protesters started breaking the park rules.

“They set up tents. They had sleeping bags,” he said. Electrical boxes also were tampered with and there was evidence of graffiti.

Sessa said Brookfield Properties, the park owner, sent in security to advise the protesters to stop pitching tents and to leave the park. The protesters, in turn, became agitated with them. The company then asked the police to help them clear out the park, the detective said.

“Most of the people, they left the park,” Sessa said. “People who refused to leave and were staying were arrested.”

Many protesters shouted and officers took out their batons after a demonstrator threw a glass bottle at the bus that police were using to detain protesters.

Sandra Nurse, a member of Occupy’s direct action working group, said police treated demonstrators roughly and made arbitrary arrests. She disputed the police assertion that demonstrators had broken park rules by putting up tents or getting out sleeping bags.

“I didn’t see any sleeping bags,” she said. “There was a banner hung between two trees and a tarp thrown over it … It wasn’t a tent. It was an erect thing, if that’s what you want to call it.”

Earlier in the day, with the city’s attention focused on the huge St. Patrick’s Day parade many blocks uptown, the Occupy rally at Zuccotti drew hundreds of people.

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, who had given a speech at a nearby university, also made an appearance at the park, milling around with protesters.

With the barricades that once blocked them from Wall Street now removed, the protesters streamed down the sidewalk and covered the steps of the Federal Hall National Memorial. There, steps from the New York Stock Exchange and standing at the feet of a statue of George Washington, they danced and chanted, “We are unstoppable.”

As always, the protesters focused on a variety of concerns, but for Tom Hagan, his sights were on the giants of finance.

“Wall Street did some terrible things, especially Goldman Sachs, but all of them. Everyone from the banks to the rating agencies, they all knew they were doing wrong. … But they did it anyway. Because the money was too big,” he said.

Dressed in an outfit that might have been more appropriate for the St. Patrick’s Day parade, the 61-year-old salesman wore a green shamrock cap and carried a sign asking for saintly intervention: “St. Patrick: Drive the snakes out of Wall Street.”

Stacy Hessler held up a cardboard sign that read, “Spring is coming,” a reference, she said, both to the Arab Spring and to the warm weather that is returning to New York City. She said she believes the nicer weather will bring the crowds back to Occupy protests, where numbers have dwindled in recent months since the group’s encampment was ousted from Zuccotti Park by authorities in November.

But now, “more and more people are coming out,” said the 39-year-old, who left her home in Florida in October to join the Manhattan protesters and stayed through much of the winter. “The next couple of months, things are going to start to grow, like the flowers.”

Some have questioned whether the group can regain its momentum. This month, the finance accounting group in New York City reported that just about $119,000 remained in Occupy’s bank account – the equivalent of about two weeks’ worth of expenses.

But Hessler said the group has remained strong, and she pronounced herself satisfied with what the Occupy protesters have accomplished over the last half year.

“It’s changed the language,” she said. “It’s brought out a lot of issues that people are talking about. … And that’s the start of change.”

I lived through summer of 68. I was a college student when “Kent State” happened. I got the see the anarchists and communist up close. At first it was just student outrage at bombing Laos and the propaganda about Nixon and the war. When you saw the “community organizers” up close they were evil. I walked away from them and went back to class. One professor said something that has always stuck with me: “If you feel you must protest, you may. But not taking final exams will come at a cost. You will fail. It will be you who must explain this to your parents who sent you here.”

40 years later the parents of these losers clearly don’t care, and moreover the kids don’t care even if their parents do. There was no sacrifice associated with going to college, except a looming loan to be “paid for in the future”. These kids didn’t have to work to go to college. They didn’t have to reason to themselves “I’m doing these difficult assignments washing dishes in the dining-hall so I can make something of myself”. Instead, they got participation trophies. Sound familiar? “Paid for in the future”.

No pain, no gain. Brace yourselves for a tough summer. God save us.

You bet your bottom dollar they are going to roll through the streets this year causing the needed chaos (bottom up), so that Obama can declare martial law (top down), and can then rip up our Constitution (inside out).

We must be vigilant and be ready to defend our country and our honor, get prepared spiritually, mentally and physically, for the dog days of summer will be something like we’ve never seen in this country – pray that I am wrong people, but I feel it in my gut.

Men’s concept of money is just another example of how men try to bring God down to their level. What kind of parent takes the time to occupy themselves with objects of trade between their several very adolescent toddler children? Only a very stupid one, because the children have to work it out, but it is the wine of the vineyard of the children’s being the parent planted that has value to the parent. I think the Lord has enough things to occupy his time like only the whole universe.

Please spare us the blogger filibuster, you could very easily have said what you had to say in one or two posts, instead you opt to flood the responses.

That being said you bring up some good points. Remember however, there is a difference of government programs and socialism. The original purpose of the Interstate program was defense which is under government purview in all forms of government, but it has unfortunately snowballed considerably since then. We do need to cut back on as many government programs as possible, and since the military no longer utilizes the interstate as it theoretically would, I’m pretty sure an enterprising entrepreneur could take up the duty of maintaining and upgrading the network.

I also disagree with the notion that “numbering” people was the downfall of our nation. God has a knowledge of every individual and everything about them, but his children have always been forced to rely on knowing them through numbers, just like the Tribes of Israel. The downfall of this country was when people got the notion in their head that they could have everything they ever desired and not work for it. They were never satisfied by what they got, so they craved more and more and shunned anything they had to work for, ignoring the satisfaction of owning something instead of having it handed to you.

That’s just my personal opinion though, which in all honesty is probably worth less than the electricity it took to type it.

Monk … don’t let him bait you. Tim’s right about one thing though, nothing under the sun will save us. Thank heaven, the Lord our savior is not “under the sun” but above it. We have to stand with God; He will not come to our side. It’s our choice.

As for the numbering … FDR started that with SS and to that extent, I believe it is indeed the work of the devil. Perhaps in some way that’s a fulfillment of scripture, but that’s not our biggest problem.

Communism and Faith in the Creator stand in clear opposition. Marx and Lenin lay this out clearly. Our constitution lays it out clearly (of which the Declaration of Independence is the preamble).

Gee, I really liked the Guy Fawkes jazz hands hand out. Just how stoned were these OWSers to not remember 8 lame hand signals?

Only stupid Liberals would come up with hand signals. Here is a thought, learn sign language then the rest of us won’t have to listen to you.

Training every Friday at 2:30 pm “how to make the police look stupid”….. Note: at a time when normal people would be working. Please tell these fools that the police already look stupid

They need to find a “hand signal” for …….MIC CHECK! When I hear that I want to hit someone, anyone….it’s so irritating!….MIC CHECK…..MIC CHECK…..while I scream …SHUT THE HE!! UP!

Here we go again, and some people figured this mess would freeze to death over the winter time. This summer will have fire, blood and chaos erupting everywhere due to Obamas orders over these bands of ‘useful idiots’

Right now its not a matter of ‘if’ the order is given by Obama; but ‘when’, say just before or close to the elections between Oct and Nov?

Many choose to bury their heads in the sand and will be totally unprepared for times many of us fear coming.

As long as they keep to the cesspool that is New York, they can have at it. They move out west, well, varmits are legal to shoot, especially if they are bothering the livestock.

Going by all those signals, they left the most important one out. If there are OWSer’s gathered around then it means that all the cr*p is gathered around stinking up the place even more.

Part of me hopes your predictions come true and all the repubes ARE swept into fema camps. The mental instability proven by most of these posters can not be tolerated for too much longer. I suspect if the feds actually cut off meth half of you would starve to death.
