  To me, the difficulty lies in Cain’s attorney’s response – suggesting both that Cain may have actually had a consensual sexual relationship with his accuser and that such consensual behavior is none of our business – suggests that issues of character do not count. If he was not involved in such a relationship, he should clearly so state. If he was involved and later repented, I think that, too, is something the people will forgive, though waiting for death by a thousand cuts rather than either being forthcoming or making a general statement that he did things in his younger days which were foolish and wrong – not the best approach. But to claim that such private affairs are none of our business? Not so. Character counts. I don’t think I want to do four or eight more years of Bill Clinton dejavu.
