Flyover State: Military Says Sequester Could Mean Goodbye to Those Airplane Demos Before Big Games (But Is That the Full Story?)
March 1, 2013 at 12:12pm
Sorry, my friend, but those tax dollars are NOT “blowing itn the wind”. Bottom line, pilot proficiency saves lives (and tax dollars burned up if an aircraft crashes). Each touch and go is counted as one landing and one take off for that aviator. Take offs and landings are the most difficult part of flying. Given the fact that many of these pilots are in their 20s to early 30s and have had limited opportunity (it only gets worse with budget cuts) to perform cross-country flying, these repetitive manuvers ensure they are seasoned and ready when called upon to participate in combat operations. Believe me, they are tax dollars well spent. U.S. military jet noise is the sound of freedom.
Flyover State: Military Says Sequester Could Mean Goodbye to Those Airplane Demos Before Big Games (But Is That the Full Story?)

The Thunderbirds are a different animal, but having coordinated flyovers of U.S. Air Force aircraft over stadiums for more than 15 years, I can say that the move to cancel flyovers is pure eyewash and, in effect, SAVES NOTHING. Air Force Instructions, as well as those of its sister services, have long required that Air Force participation in these flyovers can occur ONLY in conjunction with PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED flight training and THEN when it will NOT conflict with planned mission profiles. I had to say “No” much, much more often than “yes” to requests for aerial support. Contrary to the myth that flyovers are costly showboating, they typically incur no additional operating expense. BTW, recruiting DOES benefit from the flyovers. Another very REAL benefit is that, given the fact that Military Operating Areas (MOAs) — airspace where pilots are able to train and practice tactics — are getting smaller and smaller because of population encroachment, these flyovers generate positive community appreciation for the Air Force’s mission and help ensure the pilots continue to have a location to train.

And @Jrook, that has exactly WHAT to do with correct grammar? But to address your point … and I am not an “evangelical”… your comments sound exactly like the kind of “hate” that you accuse them of fomenting. Peddle vitriol much?

I suppose I should have sent something to them offline, @Justpeachy. Yes, as a paid writer for more than 20 years, I have had my share of errors. When I did, though, I usually had my head handed to me on a platter by the editor. The good news is that the Blaze corrected the headline and the lead too.
