Hey Jungle J, you don’t get it after 10 years of service, it takes 20 years to reach retirement unless you are medically retired.

    Point being SERVICE CONNECTED.

Didn’t say he shouldn’t have been examined. Said that he should have addressed it at his discharge physical. Also, if it is true that all ALS diagnoses do not require jumping through hoops, why was his claim denied 3 times. Seems to me that a Service officer from the DAV or the AM Vets could have helped him in this situation. There is more to this story that is not being reported.

Why didn’t they ask them for the test at the discharge physical where it would have been more appropriate to bring up problems he thought was associated with his service. The article states that his health started to deteriorate after his discharge.

“I noticed his health decline right after he got out of the military…right after he cleaned up after Desert Storm,” she told KLTV-TV. “He started having neurological problems…he had a slurred voice sometimes, and he started having cramps in the balls of his feet that went into his knee and into his thigh.”

If he was having problems while he was in the military, he should have addressed them.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to say the VA is great place. My husband hasn’t been able to get an appt. at the Phoenix VA in 10 years to address his service related deafness, I am saying that there is more to this article than meets the eye.

Apparently many of you including the author of this story does not understand how the VA works. My husband was in the USMC for 25 years. His MOS was 001, pay, personnel and benefits, so when I read this story I knew something was off.
    1. The VA only deals with SERVICE RELATED illnesses and injuries. Unless this woman can prove that her husband’s ALS was SERVICE RELATED, she doesn’t have a leg to stand on. Just because
someone serves in the military does not entitle them to VA benefits.
    2. All separated members of the military make an appointment for a discharge physical. If they are found to have SERVICE RELATED illnesses or injuries, they have ONE YEAR to make a claim with the VA to be rated for disability payments and further healthcare related to their SERVICE RELATED illnesses or injuries.
    3. After reading this story, it appears the only VA benefits that this family is entitled to is the normal one time death benefit payment (approx. $600.00) and his headstone if he if he is not buried in a VA cemetery. He also has the right to be buried in a VA cemetery (some cemeteries have certain conditions that must be met.)
This story is misleading. Just because someone served in the military does not entitle them to all benefits. Writing stories like these do not help the members of the military who served and earned their benefits. It’s not appropriate to bash the VA when the benefits being addressed are not earned and the person is not entitled to them.

@ExpertShot I am also so sorry to hear about your loss. We are involved with survivor outreach and they have been wonderful as you say. I wish I knew how we could get in touch with one another. I would like to ask you some questions. Our son had only been stationed at Ft. Stewart a short time, transferred from Ft. Lewis in Washington state.

God Bless your family, a fellow Gold Star family.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Some of the comments I have seen here are truly disturbing.

Sadly our son was one of these statistics. Our son Sean hung himself in his barracks room on July 28th of this year at Ft. Stewart, GA.

I applaud this man for his efforts as he may save another family the pain and suffering that we have gone through in the past few months.

    God Bless him!

WOW, her parents must be proud. Their daughter just went in front of the whole world and professed to being a slut.

She should learn how to hold an aspirin between her knees, then she wouldn’t have any use for contraception. I’m certainly not going to pay for her to have sex.

How does someone this stupid get into Georgetown University? I thought you had to have some smarts to get into college these days, apparently not.

Please stop calling this a “nazi” symbol. Do the nazi’s own fonts? This is another slap in the face to our Marines… Have any of you people ever seen the front of a Kiss album. Puhleeeeeeeeez just get over it.

This adminstration won’t be happy until everyone of our military members are in jail for some stupid little thing. It’s time people get a life and leave our military guys alone, otherwise, go put your ass out there on the front lines.

The Constitution does not give you the right not to be offended…sounds like this rabbi has his own issues he needs to deal with. The holocaust was a terrible thing, but c’mon, this is taking it way too far.

The way I see it, they just saved us from another loser football player that disrespects and rapes women, abuses alcohol and drugs and gets off scott free because he’s a star football player.

Why is it that everytime I see a picture of this man, he has his feet up on the furniture? He has NO respect for this country, I can’t stand the man. My dream is to see him shackled and marched into Leavenworth for the death of a border patrol agent. His fingerprints are all over fast and furious.

They bring in foreign IT workers because they work for less money. It has nothing to do with there not being enough Americans to do the job. After you spend 80K to get a decent education to do the jobs, they expect a living wage, foreigners work for half of that.

    I think the idea stinks.
