You are a has been marginal media figure, albeit a fascinating object lesson in what the underclass in the US is willing to believe. More ideas, less stories about your dog’s illnesses or people acidentally spilling wine on your wife at the park.

  You can believe in individual salvation and also understand the value and power of people coming together to achieve a common goal. The two are not mutually exclusive. Think barn raisings. Think wagons joining on their way down the Oregon Trail. Think of human beings going to church together, since we are on a religion thread now.

  I also hope for a more humane and rational approach from this pope. I hope for ordination of women as priests, relaxation of birth control rules, inclusion of gay people as equal members of the flock, weeding out of deviant abusive priests, and recognition of the value of liberation theology.

  It will be a disappointment if there is no progress in these areas during his reign. However, when I look at the history of the Catholic Church in its totality over the past 2,000 years, there has been tremendous progress through the ages in the church’s attitude toward art, science, and the common man. It happens slowly, but it does happen.

  And the fact that the church has a strong foundation that spans 2,000 years of human cultural/moral evolution and has always valued education and rejected fanaticism are hopeful signs. No matter what, Catholicism will never descend to the excesses of protestanism with its snake handling and tongue speaking sects, mega-churches, dollar worshippers, fire&brimstone preaching psychos, and invented new religions like Mormonism.

  A gun has no purpose other than injuring or killing. Why would a parent allow this around their children?

  I hear a lot of talk around here justifying gun ownership on the grounds that guns are needed to protect against criminals and/or to rise up against a tyrannical government.

  Neither is true, and everyone here knows it. If you need a gun to protect against crime, then we do not live in a civilized society with a police force that does its job and a population that is not angry and stressed and pushed against the wall to survive.. The answer here is to address the causes of violent crime in the US and the failure of the police force to curb it.

  As for rising up against the government–please!!! Think for one second–life is not the movie ‘Red Dawn.’ You will never defeat it in the Waco/Ruby Ridge mode that Blazer regulars seem to admire. You win with votes. We vote our government in and out of power every few years. The thing is, people aren’t buying what the GOP is selling.
