U.S. Judge Gets Reprimand for Claiming Victims’ Bodies Can Prevent Rape: ‘The Body Shuts Down’
December 14, 2012 at 10:02am
@Battlegrounds: Right, that’s exactly how I read it too. I get so frustrated with news stories not reporting the whole thing but then when they do I find that a lot of commenters frustrating because they don’t bother to read the whole story and just jump to conclusions.
Sites need to start implementing a technology to bar people from posting comments until they have read the story; how to implement that would be difficult but maybe a quick 3-question test the author writes regarding basic details of the story. I don’t know.
At any rate, thank you for showing me that not all of the commentators are being idiots.
:)
Here’s the Internet Explorer ‘Fast Spreading’ Malicious Bug You Need to Know About

@Muffy: care to back your claim that “most MS software is written by the Chinese”??? I’m not a huge MS-fan, I’m a Mac fan-boy that uses Chrome as my browser. But to claim that most MS software is written by the Chinese is a pretty ludicrous claim given how many American software developers they hire.
People that just spout hard-to-believe-stuff without any backing just look… not credible. Back it, or don’t say it.
‘Nothing Improper Occurred’: University Spokesman Now Denies Flag Mistreated by Campaign at Obama Event — But Experts Say Otherwise
September 8, 2012 at 11:13am
I want this administration out as much as the next guy.
I greatly love and respect the flag and served in the Navy from 2000-2006 and had the duty very often of hoisting the flag aboard the mast on both of the ships I served on.
There is no doubt about it, the flag appears to have been disrespected at this Obama event.
BUT…
I believe this story is sensationalized a bit.
Yes, it was wrong they way they treated the flag; but it actually happens all the time by otherwise well-intentioned people.
All sorts of patriotic folk wear flag clothing and buttons and such, use flag table clothes and napkins, put flag bumper stickers on their car, etc.
And in the Navy every day we lowered the flag (on both of my ships) we folded the flag correctly and then somewhat haphazardly tossed it in the bottom of the podium in one of our lockers where it often fell out on to the ground or had others things placed in on top of it.
We should not treat the flag this way.
However, we almost all have at one point or another without realizing it.

One part the article didn’t touch on (that they SHOULD have) was the men who spend 8-12 hours loading these munitions into the gun… the rounds and powder aren’t light (each discharge requires a powder AND a “bullet” and each of them weight around 30-60 pounds)… since the gun can fire 20 rounds/minute that means that the loading team (about 3 guys) are humping just under 100 pounds into the gun every 3 seconds. The 3 guys form a human chain and pass the rounds from one to another in order to get it from the magazine into the chamber. That means each guy humps about 2000 pounds per minute. Granted, they usually shoot in bursts so there is down time in that working-day… but they can sustain that rate of fire usually for at least 15min or longer at a given time. We routinely shot several thousand rounds in a day.
Source: I served this auxiliary duty for about 6 months when I was a fresh sailor onboard the USS Valley Forge. It was very tiring work.

I served onboard (not too long ago) the USS Milius and USS Valley Forge. The 2 that replied to your post don’t understand what you were saying so thought I’d share info for them. When the Navy “builds schools, roads, etc” we aren’t doing it as our primary mission. When we make port-stops on cruise we make them typically for 2-4 days at a time. Traditionally we (sailors) tend to spend most of our time spending our money getting drunk (because when you spend 30-60 days at sea working, you tend to get depressed). Offering us the opportunity to help the local community is as much for them as it is for us and it costs the taxpayer almost nothing (we would be there anyways to give us some shore-time). Typically we don’t actually build a whole school, for example, we just help clean up a run down one. And it goes a long way towards showing our good-will and earning good-will in return. It’s a very cheap way of promoting US-diplomacy. Trust me, I’m an early Tea Party type guy, strong pro-states rights and all that. Having our sailors spend a few days fixing up an area of a local community when they make a port stop is at the very, very bottom of whatever concerns we might have. Any expense, by comparison, is so trivial as to be practically 0.
Amazon and Apple May Have Fixed the Security Flaws That Paved Way for Major Hack of Your Data
August 8, 2012 at 10:23am
The industry needs a large clearinghouse consisting of a few large providers that consumers subscribe to in order to validate their identity to web sites. Instead of having login credentials managed by individual websites, have the sites refer you to the clearinghouse to login where the clearinghouse is responsible for validating you and then refers you back to the original website and telling them yes indeed you are who you say you are.
That way, the consumer chooses the company that stores the keys to their most private data — and it would be easier to implement a strong (but responsive) security system since it would be one provider the consumer would ever deal with regarding their personal private keys.
Read about “central authentication service” (CAS).
Paleo Diet Blogger Suing State for Free Speech Rights, Hopes Case Reaches Supreme Court
August 8, 2012 at 10:12am
@Steve28: I’m a paleo, my dad is a nutritarian (Fuhrman), except he won’t talk rationally with me so I can’t get a simple answer to a simple “?”. Maybe you can help me understand something?
As you may (or may not know), paleos advise eating little to no product of the agricultural revolution… so, both grains and legumes are pretty well off-limits; this due to the reason that these products cause a range of problems when consumed in large amounts and whose nutrients are not highly bio-available. Also, in order to control blood sugars, they advise moderate intake of fruit and starches; if you are trying to lose weight (like I am), they advise even less intake of fruit/starch.
So, my question is this: as a diabetic type of nutritarian the main difference between you and paleos is the consumption of beans vs. meat. But beans (in large amounts) can be demonstrated to be unhealthy (to the contrary, meat can be demonstrated to be healthy; it’s more about the type of meat, processing methods, and other things people typically eat with meat that makes meat seem “unhealthy”; but let’s assume for a minute that meat is equally unhealthy as beans). So, both meat and beans are out. Here’s my question: where do we then get the bulk of our daily calories from?
I can’t get him to answer this question, he asserts that the rest of the nutritarian diet will provide your calories, but won’t give me an ideal daily menu. Any help here?
Utah Announces it Can Restrict Gun Use & Target Shooting to Prevent Fires
July 3, 2012 at 11:49am
Lately, I’ve started to realize that our differences (as Americans) largely stem from forcing issues to a one-size-fits-all solution at the federal level. If we would stop doing that, and then allow people in other states to enact their own policies and shut our mouths about what other people do in their own states, we would be a whole lot happier and better off in America than we currently are.
PEOPLE — We need to stop dictating all of us have to live in the same way! It totally makes sense right now in UT to limit outdoor shooting. If you live in NY, WA, or FL, you really have *ZERO* business commenting on this story or even having much of an opinion about it. If you don’t like it, too bad. Unless you want us telling you how to live, shut it.

Good point. This is why, lately, I’ve started to realize that our differences (as Americans) largely stem from forcing issues to a one-size-fits-all solution at the federal level.
