I saw firsthand how racist cops in NYC can be. I was outside my apartment having a drink with some people from my block. A cop happened to get stopped in traffic in front of us. He saw the jug of wine under a chair, and decided that he was going to hassle us over it. I did not have my wallet, or any ID on me. I had a cup in my hand. The cop asked me if I had been drinking, I told him yes, and he scolded me for telling him the truth. I told him my ID was upstairs in my apartment. He then ignored me, and took the ID’s from my neighbors who were all black and in their mid to late 30′s. He wrote them all a ticket for drinking and pretended like I wasn’t there. Needless to say, as a new resident to the area I was uncomfortable about being put in that situation. I would have had no issue with getting a ticket because(even though I don’t agree with it), I was breaking the law by drinking in public and having an open container.
