Ohio State’s Mormon President Under Fire Over Anti-Catholic Quips: ‘You Just Can’t Trust Those Damn Catholics’

As one of those Damn Catholics, who cares? He was making a joke. A poor one, but a joke nonetheless. My life won’t change one iota because of some off color humor.

2. hing with scouts. Kind of like education spending.
3. The people that voted against this change are primarily field scouts.

Now, here are the consequences. I’ll give you a few scenarios. These are strictly as it is now.
1. A troop gets a gay boy in. Who is going to bunk with him on camp outs? In some scenarios they will have kids who don’t care, just like a boy and girl can. But what if all the other boys are uncomfortable with sleeping alone in a tent with this boy? He will get shunned. This happens with hetero boys- as they can be cruel. When the gay boy tells his parents, they will get mad. In todays culture there’s a really good chance that they will sue. At the very minimum, that troop will cease to exist. This is a real can of worms.
2. A troop gets two gay boys in. You may think, ‘problem solved’; they will bunk in the same tent and everyone will be happy. Well, would you, as someone who’s responsible for someone’s child, let a boy and a girl bunk in the same tent? The official policy of the scouts is that there should be no sex at all. There’s a good chance that something will happen. Remember being a hormone laden teenage boy. It’s rare the boy that would be able to resist a girl throwing herself at him. What makes anybody think being gay would be any different? Someone finds out, and tells the scoutmaster. What does he do? The gay boys will be ultra protected (especially at first) and any consequences will be interpreted as homophobia. However, if he leaves it alone, they will be emboldened. Eventually the parents will find out and sue the troop.

There are several things that might help you understand this. BTW, I’m a scout leader- and there’s another leader in our troop that’s a voting member; he’s been to all the debates. He’s been explaining what’s been going on while the kids have been doing their part of the meeting. (Boy Scouts is boy lead. The adults are there in a supporting role.)
1. There are two types of leaders at the upper voting levels.
1. A field scouter. This is somebody that is involved with a troop. He was probably the parent of a scout and stayed on after his son left. Or else was a scout that stayed on after turning 18 to keep helping. They are surrounded by the kids at least four times a month.
2. A buy in. A businessman that uses a leadership position as a way to pad his resume/legacy. Basically this person uses his position as a ‘feather in his hat’. It’s a way to make other people look at him with respect so as to raise his place in society. They usually get the position by buying their way in. – Oh, I mean he is liked because he generously donates so much. Sounds like some other big institution here in the USA…
2. It’s primarily about money. After the Supreme court decision a few years ago BSA lost some major donors. Intel, UPS, etc. They could get other donors, and these donors could replace the money lost. But darn it, that would be SO much work! It’d be easier to just get those big donors back. The people who came in through money tend to think about money as the final t
