To which “moral compass” are you referring? The one that allows cannibalism, or the one that encourages infanticide? Oh wait, what about the one that directs men to stone female victims of rape?

I think it is safe to say, that most, if not all, societies have a set of rules concerning moral conduct. However, the specific rules or mores are not necessarily share with other societies. That is because morality has a source, or a foundation. Note the term, “compass”. A compass is a thing, an instrument, and a source of direction. This source of direction appears as writings or teachings that are had in books, or delivered via an oral tradition. In all civilizations, this source also influences the laws of the land.

Western civilization’s moral foundation springs from the “The Ten Commandments”, and the teachings of Jesus. Eastern civilization has had a myriad of influences. Historically, before the introduction of Communism, Chinese society’s morality was influenced by the writings of Confucius. In India, society has been influenced by Hinduism in “Hindu texts”, Buddism, and Sikhism, which is based on the teachings of Guru Narak. “Sharia Law”, the law of the land in Iran, is the governing arm of Islam. The “morality” of Sharia Law permits and promotes behavior that most other societies would consider “immoral”.

I would say that there is no universal “moral compass”.
