House Passes $9.7 Billion in Sandy Relief — and 67 Republicans Voted Against It

While I understand how people who post on this board feel about big government, I am honestly surprised at the mean spirited comments here towards the folks who went through Sandy. I have lived on Long Island for over 40 years. I don’t live on the beach. I live quite a ways away from the ocean. I have never seen anything like this.
I have never taken a dime from the government. Never been on welfare. Never been on unemployment. I have never asked for anything.
I lost everything except my car and a bag of clothes. I have no family here and ALL of my friends were just as bad off as me. I needed genuine help. And I was glad FEMA was there. According to some posters here, I am stupid or a leech for even living here. Some posters on this website are quick to lump everyone into a single category. Shame on them. Have a heart.

I did not vote for big government.
Also I did not “Build my home on the sand on the beach”. I rented a one room apartment over a mile from the ocean on Long Island and lost everything I owned.
With that being said I have worked hard all my life and never asked the government for a dime in return. In this situation, I was wiped with no where to go. You are darn right I gladly accepted FEMA rental assistance.
For those passing judgement on this board, you have no idea how bad this storm was. There has been nothing like it in modern history. I honestly hope nothing like this ever happens to you.
