  Ok, I have now had heart failure! Leave it to the liberal DSM Register to put our kids at risk. I was browsing the Blaze when I saw my hometown school on the map. Of course I do not subscribe to the Register (I have boycotted it for years). We have gun free zones in schools but on the bright side, we do have the shall issue concealed carry law!

  Just like most private Catholic schools (my children attend), if their are children who receive food stamps receive free school lunches. That is why the Jewish schools receive federal funding.

  That’s already the case. We are in our 40s and have been farming for over 26 years. My husband bought his first 40 acres in 1983 during the farm crisis. We do not have new equipment, it’s old, it breaks down, but it’s paid for! The only thing that isn’t completely paid for is the land. We have struggled to make it to where we are and land values are skyrocketing! I’m an accountant, I do our books and put our financial plans together, what people do not understand profits are up, but so are all of our input costs! 15 years ago it cost $120 to put in an acre of corn. Today that same acre is over $300. Fertilizers, fuel, repairs, insurance, so the profit margin is still slim – unless you have your land paid for.

  Barbara Raymond is wrong “and armed members of the military were not able to prevent the shootings at Ft. Hood.” Everyone is missing this point in the article. At Fort Hood, there were NO armed military. As you come onto the base, all of your weapons are secured – that means that if all the soldiers were armed, I bet there wouldn’t be 13 dead.

  For those of you who have never dealt with Vilsack, he is an idiot. Most of us farmers do understand the farm subsidy program. Most of us want to be left alone to farm. Unfortunately, the government forces us into programs that we do not want, nor need and then they tell us how to farm. This is not an easy life! We moved to our current farm with 12 old cows and a few sheep. Today we have over 400 head and I must work off the farm to help pay for our household and insurance. It’s a very tough life, especially those of us with livestock and when this idiot was the governor of the state of Iowa he didn’t realize that farmers pay fuel tax on the fuel we burn while on a public roadway. How this one got to head the ag department is beyond me. He came from the east coast, opened up a law practice, became a mayor and then our governor. My father worked in his administration in Iowa. He was one of the dirtiest politicians we had. He was quite fond of putting people in their places (including other Democrats) when he didn’t like their decisions. Until you’ve had to deal with NRCS, FSA, and the people that tell you how many acres you actually farm – like when they cut our acres down because of a shadow on an aerial photo, then you have room to comment!

  I live on the “left” coast of Iowa and can’t believe this one myself. I quit reading the Des Moines Rag years ago because it was so liberal and only concentrated on Des Moines. I grew up in central Iowa and my father was a state legislator for over two decades. Every chance they got they would bash the Republicans. But this is a SHOCK! Maybe Romney can take the state!
