  The asteroid was apparently not named after the Egyptian god Apep himself but after the recurring Stargate SG-1 villain Apophis that is based on Apep. The guys who discovered the asteroid were fans of the show, according to Wikipedia. Maybe NOW there’s going to be some interest in defibrilating the Stargate franchise :S
