  • Obviously, this comment goes against the trend on this story, on this site, but I’m hoping that’s OK — It’s possible, isn’t it, that the model idea that “everyone should carry a gun so we can stop the bad guys” isn’t the best idea? For instance, don‘t even some weapons stored at some people’s houses get put to use in unexpected ways such as by the children who live there, not realizing the danger, and by people acting out of anger at someone they love rather than at criminals? Also, let’s say more people carry weapons and use them in this kind of situation, trying to thwart crime. Do they all by their human nature have great aim or might some shoot the store clerk standing near the robber, or some other bystander — or, since bodies are soft, shoot through the intended person and hit someone on the other side of him? Accidents do happen when lethal force is being used in tense situations. It could also be that — unlike in this situation where the robbers‘ gun wasn’t functional nor loaded — the robber could, if not mortally wounded, start shooting once he’s hit, and hurt people he would not have hurt otherwise, if only he’d been left to take his $50 or $500, which is nothing compared to what life is worth. That is, it could be that more guns on the scene are NOT better than just one. These guys just wanted money, not to do a bunch of random shooting. That’s clear from the story. So don’t imagine that the man in white was actually saving any l
