  • Ok, we can all play the guessing game about who is to blame. As a dentist, and one who sees children, I see a few obvious things.

    1. The child had severely decayed teeth that needed major restoration, thus the stainless steel crowns on all of the teeth.

    2. For the teeth to merit such treatment, it is clear some form of neglect was ongoing. Sorry folks, if your kid isnt brushing well it is YOUR job to make sure it happens as a parent. Dont blame the dentist!

    3. After years of seeing both private pay and state medicaid patients, I rarely see children with such damage other than those on state assistance. Therefore, the mother probably did not pay a dime for all of the dental treatment rendered (I am guessing the actual retail cost was upwards of $5-7k, reimbursement by the state at about 25-30% knocks that down substantially). Perhaps the state does not cover ‘white’ crowns and thus the family really had no choice in the matter.

    4. I also have found that parents whose children have state medicaid are some of the least attentive, most demanding people in terms of what they WANT from you, regardless of what the state actually covers.

I have seen good and bad and although I will not broad brush paint all medicaid recipients with the same brush,my vote is an inattentive, neglectful parent lacks the knowledge or will to ensure their child is cared for properly until the results of the neglect are apparent. I have seen it first hand over and over aga

  • @ Josephsmyth…your semantic games are interesting here, as you are making the assumption that being a ‘Christian’ implies belonging to a particular group, to which ‘Mormons’ do not belong. However, would you explain to me then, how the differing theology of the over 40,000 + sects of Christianity keeps them all in the same classification as ‘Christian’, yet Mormons are not included? A simple historical analysis would paint a different picture.
In A.D. 431 and 451, there were fundamental differences between several Christian groups, which ended with the branching off of the Assyrian and Miaphysite (Asian Orthodox) theologies from the main group of Early Christianity. Then, more major theological and ecclesiastical disagreements led to Great Schism, and the distinction of the Roman Catholic Church vs. the Eastern Orthodox. By the way, ALL claiming to be the one true church. Then we had sort of a reunion with some Roman Catholics practicing eastern rites, and western. Along comes the 16th century, with the Reformation, which gave rise to Anglicanism, Protestantism (from which most US Christian faiths derived), and Anabaptism. Then came the rise of Restorationism (Where the Mormon church falls). ALL of these arose from Early Christianity, and most argue that they are the only true church, or understand scripture better or more completely than others. No offense, but you are a prime example of the hubris endemic in many of todays ‘Christians’.

  • Calling BS on this one. The misspelling for one, as letters are generated from the database of membership records which would be correct. Furthermore, if this dude is an ‘active, practicing Mormon’, he would for sure have met and know his Stake President or members of the Stake Presidency, and the High Council members (has to be at least one or 2 from his own ward). Also, a charge of apostasy is so extremely rare its not even funny, as corroborated by the interview the article mentions. Calling your bluff Mr. Twede…you have an axe to grind and you are making an issue conveniently at election time to make political points…bad form, lame try, pathetic delivery.

  • How far do we have to go in being ‘inclusive’ and ‘sensitive’ to other worldwide cultures before our unique culture disappears? Do other countries teach such ‘courageous conversation’ methods so each of their students feels good about the curriculum? Our country, instead of being the melting pot it once was, is turning into a fragmented society where each ancestral culture is valued over the culture of America. When will it end?

  • Hey people…before you let your blood boil and start the kneejerk responses…re read this. It is tongue-in-cheek, satire, comedy, a joke…Put the guns and ammo away and stop carpet bombing the original poster. Not his/her fault you rush to comment before you think about it for a split second. Relax, read it again, and laugh along!!

  • @Mutiny-
OK dude..I have had it with your ‘product of Satan’ garbage. Really. The argument that Mormons worship a different Jesus than Christians is not only indefensible, but ludicrous. Mormons may have a different perception of Christ, His mission/divinity/relationship with God the Father, etc. But it seems to me that they accept the Christ of the Bible, who walked in Jerusalem, and taught His gospel. As far as I know, there was no other Christ walking around at that time, who is referenced in what we have now as the Holy Bible. Those that insist they worship a ‘false’ Christ have really not thought about their argument at all. A ‘false’ Christ would be one different than He who the Bible describes. One who claims to be ‘like’ the Christ of the Bible, but is not Him in person.

Lets make it simpler. Out of all the people you know, would you say that your perception of who they are is an accurate description of them? Or are there things about them you do not know, or do not understand? You maybe have a much better shot at being right about your own family members, or even yourself, but someone else? I doubt it. Mormons see the Christ of the Bible differently than you do, but that does not mean they worship a different being. They worship Him differently than you do. Big flippin deal. Do you have all the answers? If not, I suggest you withhold judgement until you do.

  • Exactly…read the whole article. They were planning on the life insurance proceeds to cover the costs of their spending spree. So I kind of agree that the hospital has some culpability here in failing to inform a patient of a diagnosis for 3 months. That is considered well below the standard of care and can be considered malpractice, regardless of the diagnosis. Should they pay for the parties and fun? No, but there is some grounds for failure to inform. What would have happened if a patient was told they were fine, and they really had a terminal illness? Everyone would be all over the hospital for failing to diagnose and inform. Outcome was different, but the principle is the same.

  • Apple is not overpriced, it is right priced. That is what the market bears. Any sane economist and free market capitalist would understand that. Yes some people buy it for the cool factor. Most of us buy it because it WORKS!. How many times have you had to reboot your android phone? How many times for your Windows PC? How many crashes, bugs, and errors have you dealt with? It can be done better, but it takes time and effort. Most companies that offer hardware and software for the PC rush things to market, do sloppy testing, and put out crap. Apple is one of the few companies that are concerned with form and function. Their products’ industrial design sets the standard, and their software WORKS. So for all those crying that some guy at Starbucks is a liberal elitist because he has a MacBook Air, just go cry in the mirror cause you were too cheap to buy a well designed product and took a chance on an inferior one. Its like shopping at Nordstroms vs. Wal-Mart. Buying at nordstroms may cost you more, but you get what works, and it lasts.

  • I am sorry, but your reasons sound more like an ‘everyone’s a winner, hook up the dude cause he had a rough life’ than reality. It was a close fight, period. Do you really think just because Manny prayed and used the money for his poor family, he should have been declared the winner? If so, I got a president I would love to hand you…

  • I live close to PDX, and there is no where on site that you cant get to a restroom within 5-10 minutes. If these guys can’t be big boys and hold it for a few minutes, or go before work and during lunch, they are just like the rest of the whining masses who continually demand their ‘rights’ for things that are not truly ‘rights’. Of course the ultra-left here in Multnomah County would vote in favor of the plaintiffs…ya gotta live here to understand.
