  • This is a tough one. I agree that it’s neither here nor there how she made her living before becoming a teacher. If this were merely a matter of rumors following her, or even confirmation without pictures and video, that would be one thing. But I have to imagine that the existence and easy availability of a video would be a continuous distraction.

Teachers are public figures to some extent, and more so than many public figures, they hold the public trust as they do their jobs. That’s something you have to consider when you decide to stand in front of the class. It’s too bad that this had to come to pass. In a better society people would just mind their own business. Perhaps her students will learn a little something about that from getting their teacher fired.

  • @AbbyGirl1994 We disagree about almost everything, but I’m glad we agree about this one. It was the school system that failed in this case, no question about it.

  • No, that is not the “logical solution.” It’s mindblowing how many adults here can’t think of any other strategies for dealing with a situation like this other than “do nothing” or “call the cops.”

I think it is a sad commentary on our schools and our law enforcement that they are unable to de-escalate an altercation with a six year old. Teachers and administrative staff are supposed to be trained to deal with unruly children. Here’s a simple strategy that almost always works: clear the room, stand back, watch carefully, and let the tantrum burn itself out. A six year old isn’t going to be on a rampage for more than a few minutes if you don’t stoke the flames by giving her attention.

  • @WantofRain The “misguided youngsters” you’re defending are 30 and 41 respectively. Probably time for them to grow up, don’t you think?

  • Keep predicting riots. One of these days, maybe you’ll be right and you can forget the other thousand times you were wrong and pretend you saw the future.

  • @TheRightsofBilly There are different kinds of inefficiency in either model. Since churches have discretion about who to help and who not to help, certain groups could find themselves without any help at all. Since the government has a mandate to help all groups, this kind of inefficiency could be avoided.

On the other side of the equation, churches are better connected to community, have wellsprings of goodwill and charity that the government does not have.

This is why the government and churches need to work together, which is, I believe, what Joel Hunter was saying.

  • The National Review is as classically conservative as they come.

  • I’ve had similar things happen. The biggest frustration for me is when I write a comment and try to post it and I’m told I have to log in to post comments…but I’m already logged in!

I don’t think it’s intentional. Just poor programming. Sure would love if they would update the comments section though.

  • Yeah, it’s so “dangerous” that this guy has lived well into his retirement after a long career as a respected college professor. Give me a break.

  • @Jaycen I just don’t think that’s true. Racists are racists, but racists who are statists try to impose their racism on others through the apparatus of government. Racism isn’t a legitimate ideology or philosophical perspective — it’s a mental illness which affects people of all ideologies and perspectives.
