  • The problem with conservatives, especially religious conservatives is they feel the need to tie morals to legislation. This is not freedom, forcing your morals (I am not an anarchist mind you – law is needed) on another is not freedom nor is it even biblical (this is why Christ dealt with the heart – not necessarily the actions). Distributing morality through law is the equivalent of the Pharisees of the time of Christ. Law does not make people good.

If you want to “save the country” you are going to have to make some alliances and find common ground, not compromise morals but join with those who have similar goals. Join those who believe in liberty while understanding that that does NOT mean you get to limit other peoples rights. You are free and they are free even if you don’t like their way of life or it endangers them (if endangers you that is different): this is the cost of real freedom.

  • To those stating that personal life does not equal professional life? Please! The problems are with the core ethics of the person. Petraues had ethics problems with his family, would you seriously trust him if he told you something to your face? For Pete’s sake, he is a politician (and military service does not insulate one from politics – especially high ranking) that alone should indicate to you he is not to be trusted! People in powerful positions in this day and time do not get there by being “truthful”, “good” and “nice” or even competent people. Politics is a constant war of successors and oneupsmanship. “Et tu, Brute?” anyone?
