Depends on what you mean by “is it legal?” Turns out there are tons of FAA “policies’ against UAV free flight without prior FAA approval. And against commercial use (i.e. aerial photography for the newspaper). On the other hand, there are no enforceable regulations preventing such flying. It is a big issue. People have been fined $10K for such adventures. But as I said, there are no enforceable regulations. However, this guy is now on the radar screen of the FAA and the administration. Guess who wants to control all technology…. The guy’s defense if challenged by some government type or law enforcement officer: (1) It is not prohibited by a duly promulgated regulation, and (2) I am just doing hobby flying under 400′ and it is always in my line of sight.
