    As a lifelong Kentuckian I’ll set the record straight…Harlan, the town, is in Harlan County Kentucky. Hazard is NOT a county, but a town in Perry County Kentucky. Both towns, in southeastern Kentucky, have “rough” histories. Gun violence has long been part of that culture. Back in the day, the coal industry provided good paying jobs, that most people would not want, for a part of the country that lacked in education. Today that’s not the case. That part of Kentucky is now consumed by prescription and illegal drugs. Many doctors have been indicted for bogus scripts written for oxycotin and other legal meds. Other people are brewing their batches of crystal meth. Best not “go up a hollar” unless you’ve been invited and even then you best be packin’.
