  There are various levels and forms of torture depending on how much an individual is willing to endure. There is soft torture from berating [ brow beating] or psychological torture to the extreme physical torture.We tend to stay away from the latter of extreme on moral grounds. Soft torture seems to be more acceptable if used properly to extract useful information.
  I would say the levels can be from one to ten. Level one is designated as soft while ten is extreme.Level eight or nine is reserved for the hardened subjects.
