  • It’s unbelievable to me that Paul Ryan would be calling for even more tax cutting! We need to pay our obligations! That is what bothered me about the GW Bush years… We went to war on multiple fronts, gave senior citizens Medicare-Part D and at the same time CUT taxes! CUT taxes during multiple wars and Medicare expansion… It’s has left us with a fiscal trainwreck. Yes, we do need spending cuts, probably even more than Obama is putting forth, but we also need to address revenues and historically LOW marginal tax rates. Balance and pragmatism… Reagan would want it that way!

  • Even Newt Gingrich assailed the Ryan Plan as “Right-Wing Social Engineering”!

I think the president is putting forth a much more balanced and pragmatic approach than Paul Ryan and Tea Party forces. At least he is asking for sacrifice on both ends of the fiscal ledger… Both spending and revenues need to be addressed! The GOP refuses to even acknowledge revenues and remains glued to Norquist’s pledge, and thus the GOP are the less honest brokers in these dealings.

Income tax rates are at near historic LOWS and we need revenues to close the budget gap. We should not go back to the 91% rates of Eisenhower or the 70% rates under Nixon… but going back to Clinton-Era rates makes some sense! We have cut taxes extensively since the Reagan years and with little to show for it. At least Obama is willing to deal and broker with the other side… The GOP is hyper-partisan and wholly unwilling to address revenues.

  • Meow… :-)

  • The race-baiting is clear to everyone but Blazers, Billy! He specifically demonizes “blacks” on food stamps in order to create cultural resentment, play on negative stereotypes, and ultimately get more votes from white Southerners. This is simply the reality of the situation.

  • Billy: I don’t think Allen West or Newt Gingrich are racist. I think West is just insensitive to actual desperation among all people and is somehow willing to defend Newt’s comments. Newt is not a racist but he is using race in divisive ways by saying that “blacks” are satisfied with food stamps.

Newt is driving a racial wedge to pit whites against blacks in order to get votes from white Southerners! Newt is not racist but he knows how to use racial stereotypes to his advantage, and it needs to be called out for what it is. Hope you can see reality one day. Love you either way. Peace for meow.

  • Hi Billy! Just stopping in to give my point of view from time to time. It’s obvious to me that Newt was ginning up racial resentment by singling out “blacks” as lazy, welfare moochers. He was obviously playing the Southern Strategy like Charlie Daniels’ fiddle. Just hoping others will see the actual reality that Newt was being very insensitive at a minimum if not outright racist!

  • Billy: It’s not all racist all the time. But we do need to call out racism and negative stereotyping, even “soft” racism (i.e. blacks are lazy welfare moochers). Newt is obviously blowing the racial dogwhistle when he singles out blacks and food stamps, and that needs to be called out! Unless conservatives and the Republican Party want to go backward to the Stone Age and alienate all voters except white Southern males.

  • It wasn’t even coded this time. He explicitly said “blacks” when discussing food stamps. Usually the “welfare queen” rhetoric is spoken in code, but Newt went right for the racial jugular and castigated blacks specifically and overtly (“blacks are satisfied with food stamps”… i.e. lazy and mooching off of whites’ tax dollars). George Wallace would be proud. Southern Strategy!

  • LODGERAT: Newt is the one who singled out “blacks” specifically. He did not single out whites or Latinos or any other ethnic group. He could have talked about all food stamp recipients but Newt chose to demonize blacks as lazy and mooching off of welfare because he knows that plays well among Southern white voters. He singled out blacks for a specific reason… To create cultural resentment towards blacks and get more votes in the primary. He played the Southern Strategy like Charlie Daniels fiddle and ultimately came out victorious!

  • Newt is the one who demonized “blacks” or “African American” specifically. I am merely repeating what Newt was saying. ALL ethnic groups are experiencing high unemployment right now. This is the worst recessionary period since the Great Depression. Yet he claims that “blacks” specifically are satisfied with food stamps. The insinuation is that blacks are lazy and mooching off of welfare and stealing whites’ tax dollars. Newt is playing the race card and creating cultural resentment towards “lazy” blacks in particular. It gets him votes especially in the South. Indeed, this strategy is known as the Southern Strategy!
