Taqiyya comes to mind when I read this article………………..
look at the child warriors of the Africa….. because their bellies are empty and they are coerced into killing…what morality do they know? also Euthyrpo dilemma….very interesting what came first the chicken or the egg?

perhaps it (your moral compass) came from your surroundings. the people you respect ….love and admire.. a person is not born with morals they are taught and learned. so when someone says they are an atheist they are merely telling me what they are not.

Is it ethical for an atheist to sell and profit off of the Bible? I think the question in my mind is…Can an atheist have ethics? (moral philosophy) if one does not believe in a higher power…where would one get the concepts of right and wrong? and how would one base a definition of said rights and wrongs?
Good question. The short answer is that moral/ethical standards can be determined by reason and empathy for others. It's really quite easy. Look at countries like Sweden or New Zealand for examples as the majority populations are essentially atheist. Look up the Euthyrpo dilemma if you're further inclined.
"Can an atheist have ethics?"
I don't think my moral compass comes from my faith in God. For example, I don't rip people off because I feel bad for doing so not because I'm afraid God is going to punish me for it. At least I don't think so.
Are we really going to have this stupid conversation again? Your ethics are not based on a higher power, they're based on your empathy as a mammal. If a higher power had anything to do with morals, then it would be demonstrable that lack of belief in one would automatically make one immoral, and as the question goes.
Can you name one immoral act that a believer cannot do? Can you name one moral act that a non-believer cannot do?
Penn Jillette is spot on about this question, google it.
If ethics are based on “empathy as a mammal”, then where did empathy come from, and why consider empathy better than cruelty? Why should empathy be better? Where do you get that idea from? If you take God out of the equation, most people prefer collectivism and uniformity. The only reason we value each person individually is because of the Judeo-Christian idea that people have infinite value.
You see, if we’re all just mammals with empathy, then criminals can’t exist. Somebody born with less empathy would just be sick or diseased, not evil. You could “cure” evil just by teaching them empathy. But that is just blatantly false. People can actively choose to empathize with ISIS instead of UNICEF. People can choose to empathize with Hitler rather than the Jews.
You see, empathy has nothing to do with morality. You can just as easily empathize with a murderer, and decide that killing people is moral and just. Without an absolute standard of morality, you cannot pick which morality is better or worse. The guy killing people has just as much right to his moral system as you do to yours. It’s called moral relativism, and it means anything can be moral as long as people agree it’s moral.
Neither nature, science, nor atheism can give you morality. You have to borrow it from someplace else. Empathy alone cannot get you there, because you could just as easily have sympathy for the devil as you can for anybody else.
I am still reading a variety of texts that pertain to what you are talking about.
Hmmm. Try starting with
Time for Truth: Living Free in a World of Lies, Hype, and Spin
by Os Guinness
6 Great Ideas By Mortimer J. Adler
will help you think more deeply and clearly about some key concepts
by Jeffrey Weeks
This may follow the development of non-religious morality, but I don't know how the author roots the underlying assumptions, or if this is made explicit.
Some people seem to root their morality in "feelings" ( I would feel bad if...)
Some seem to borrow from religious roots without acknowledging that they have done so.
It is simply "common sense" or kindness, and they think that they can have these things without any underlying structure to support them when they are less convenient or obvious.
SAm- Lol.... Love it! Give this crazy bee-atch something to complain about!!!!!!!

I don’t want to be on camera but I don’t have a choice in the matter ….pull up to a stop light I’m on camera…go into just about any store I’m on camera…All police should always act as if they are on camera they are the employees of the people and should act accordingly. What is good for me is good for all…if the job is too tough for them they can leave and be replaced with people who are more capable to handle the high stress of the position. Nobody said it would be easy or without danger.

I’m glad those guards are armed. They need to be. The only real way to detour crazy shoot em up cowards is to show force. Everybody Knows it. The real killers prefer unarmed victims. More guns =Less violence..
