‘Just Get Up and Teach Them Instead of Handing Them a Frickin’ Packet, Yo’: Student’s Rant to Teacher Goes Viral

You cannot become an effective classroom teacher in just 3 weeks in the classroom. If that is your expectation, you are doomed to be a so-called “bad” teacher or in reality, an ineffective one. If you do not have control of the classroom, no teaching takes place, much less learning. I have been in the classroom for 30 years and classroom management is job one and always has been. How you arrive at control of the classroom is just as important as being there but without classroom control you have nothing of value to offer the students, no matter what else you know or may be able to do.

“Throwing a packet at a kid everyday” that’s pretty perjorative language but not really accurate.
When you attack teachers as a class or group, you reinforce the socialist ideals of the collective and reinforce the perception that conservatives are simply anti-teacher and anti-education. You may win brownie points with other people with your same outlook but not the public in general. If you believe in the collective enough to slam on groups of people, including teachers, you are just a negative part of the socialist world in their eyes, not something apart and unique.

The blanket statement “many teachers are not that good” assumes facts not in evidence and follows a standard conservative anti-teacher mantra about “good teachers” verus “bad teachers.” This article is more of a rorschach test on conservatives than evidence against public schools and/or public school teachers. The teacher in the video appears to remain dalm and in control as she excludes a clearly disruptive student from the room. The fact that the evident is recorded on video is itself proof that the student indended to create a behavioral incident by which to be ejected and then rant at the teacher about her teaching method. Therefore, given that this was a “gotcha” set up, the teacher shows herself to be a calm, self-disciplined professional with no real evidence against her, except for the accusations in the rant of the intentionally disruptive student. Yet, most readers here at the Blaze treat the rude, disruptive behavior of the student as “proof-positive” of the charges laid. And isn’t that exactly a tactic conservatives “hate” in liberals?
This story by its very nature underscores exactly how conservatives fail to get the picture on public education and therefore cede the battle and battleground itself to the liberals and the progressives. Most students will continue to be taught in public schools, whether the elite on the right accept that reality or not. So, why not fight the good fight instead of the stupid one? It’s the curriculum, stupid.

The teacher kept her cool and followed standard protocols of removing a distruptive student from class who was doing his best to bait her into getting as personal as he was. He failed. She behaved professionally. The classroom itself is not the proper forum for such a complaint to be made. All schools have published complaint processes to follow that do not include staging a personal attack on the teacher in the classroom. It is amazing to see how many people here applaud behavior they would never accept aimed at them in their own workplace.
Furthermore, it underscores why conservatives keep losing the war for control of the schools and for the hearts and minds of our young people. Personal attacks on teachers just feed the monster of big government instrusion into the schools. Too bad so many conservatives are too dense to get that simple truth. Those who control the curriculum control the schools and how the curriculum is taught. And yet conservatives appear content to just whine about teachers and let liberals write the curriculum. Way to go.

Really? So anyone who disagrees with how you do your job should confront you with a hidden camera in the middle of your workplace with a rant aimed at getting a rise out of you? The teacher in removing the student from the room was following standard educational protocols aimed at minimizing disruptions to the learning environment for everyone else in the room. She kept her cool in the face of a very personal attack aimed at making her lose her cool.
The whole notion of the student “did nothing wrong” is itself so wrong-headed. Who among you would want to be challenged this way in your workplace about how you do your job? Kudos to the teacher for keeping her cool and shame on the teacher-haters for showing their deep-set prejudices. You are just staying on the lose-lose path conservatives have been on for 30 years with regards to public education. Getting personal with the teachers helps no one; it’s the curriculum, stupid. And who controls it.
This article appears to make the case for more big government intrusion into the schools. It sure does nothing to further the cause for local control of the schools and the curriculum.

I see a teacher struggling to keep her cool as a kid gets rude, crude and personal in his attack on her curriculum and teaching style for the benefit of his hidden camera. Teacher-haters see “disinterest” because she keeps her cool while following standard protocol to exclude a student making such a rant from further distrupting class. If a teacher regularly let anyone distrupt class this way, the same teacher-haters would point out that the teacher did not have control of the room.

The overly simplistic, anti-teacher angle of the story simply feeds the monstrocity of Federally controlled schools. In any school, when a student goes on an insubordinant rant, filmed or unfilmed, standard procedure is to eject the student and send them to the office to minimize negative impact on the rest of the class. The teacher was acting properly within expected disciplinary norms. Can you imagine Glenn Beck or any other TV host letting a kid with a camera take over the show to rant at will to the audience and up end the pre-planned timeline of the show? Yet, we are supposed to believe that the teacher should have stopped everything to let this kid rant at her in public about her teaching style. Really? I do not know anyone who would go for that at their job, either.
Most schools have a uniform complaint process in place, that usually starts with an after class conference between student and teacher. Teachers are not expected to let students or anyone belittle them or their efforts in public, yet several commentors here appear to expect to be able to do exactly that.
This article will not bring any educators who are the fence about conservatism into the fold; it just extends the stereotype that public school teachers are lazy union bums. It ignores the reality that a majority of teachers regularly donate 10 or more unpaid hours of service to their jobs every week, just to get the job done. It’s called “teacher homework” and everyone knows most teachers do it.

It is amazing (and depressing) how quick everyone is to leap to judgment against the teacher without a clear picture of the whole story. It is assumed that the rant is 100% accurate and that the teacher is 100% at fault even though the article itself does not given us a complete picture. Since Social Sciences are a mandated subject for standardized testing, the teacher may have very little control over instructional style. Those choices could be being made for her at the departmental, school site and/or district level. The article does not address that aspect of the story, it just reports the rant as if that was the total story, which raises my skepticism pretty much to the max.
‘I Don’t Give a S**t’: Teachers’ Alleged Bullying of Conservative Student Launches School District Investigation

This incident will no doubt be seen by some as proof positive that K-12 teacher tenure needs to end now; however, I see a different problem. Tenure is not the problem here, but rather school culture as promulgated by the teachers union. If you weaken individual teacher tenure, you directly strengthen the hand of the unions. Now that unions all but own the public schools outright, they no longer want teachers to have tenure. Unions by nature want to pick winners and losers by the expediency of their own immediate self-interests, unfettered by any rules whatsoever. Tenure means conservative teachers and teachers of conscience can resist the “collective.”
Tenure is not and was never intended as a “job benefit” for the teacher. It exists to protect the integrity of the educational experience for our students. Tenured teachers are free to be unmoved in their ethics in grading and student discipline. And originally, violation of those professional ethics was the first and foremost reason to overturn tenure and fire the teacher. Which is exactly what should happen here with the teacher who doesn’t give a “****,” but won’t because unions made tenure very, very hard to overturn when unions were relatively weak.
Conservatives need to get union hacks off of school boards and restore real local control. That and restoring balance to tenure including how to overturn it when necessary will end this sort of abuse.
