  The Government Accounting Office lists something north of 1000 federal benefits which are reserved as special privileges for opposite-sex married couples. Those benefits aren’t conferred by the state where you live, nor by the church (or whatever you might have) where you worship or where your marriage ritual was performed. Those benefits are provided by the government. If two persons, of legal age to enter into an enforceable contract want to commit to enter into a contract (marriage license) to avail themselves of those federal benefits, and there is no compelling societal interest against it, I don’t see why it shouldn’t be allowed. That eliminates marrying your goat (dog, donkey, whatever has been thrown out here), and minors (can’t enter into enforceable contracts).

  And no legislation that I’m aware of is attempting to require religious institutions to provide marriage services against their doctrine. So the organized religions can still refuse to marry whom they choose; the wedding ceremony doesn’t carry the weight of a government sanction (which it doesn’t already; that’s why you go to town hall to get a marriage license).

  It’s really as simple as rendering unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s.

  Either your husband is an idiot, or you are a liar, or (most likely scenario) both of these. Although when you get fired from your job with cause, it becomes considerably more difficult to qualify for unemployment benefits.

  I can’t believe all of the other states aren’t clamoring for you to move! You sound like a fine addition to any community. Not so sure why a crashing dollar would put you in a worse situation, though; perhaps it’s all the Italian suits and German sports cars you’re buying?

  This whole thing is sort of silly. If it hadn’t been for Glenn Beck, Michael D’Antuono would still be laboring in relative obscurity; this controversy was ginned up by Glenn for the sole purpose of generating (lucrative) outrage. Seriously, go and Google this guy, and see the dates of his mentions. And as far as Glenn’s “speaking truth to liberal power”, and causing said liberals’ heads to explode, that’s not happening either. There aren’t very many news stories on this “controversy” at all. If the contention that some folks ranting on Twitter is emblematic of the Left’s hypocritical freakout, well that’s pretty thin gruel. And Piss Christ was 25 years ago.
