  • The sign needs to be more prominent, and they probably need to be informing people verbally at the door. The terms are unenforceable if the customer didn’t know them upon entering.

  • Counting your rounds and reloading before firing the last one is a superior method. Anyone serious about defending themselves should practice until it becomes second nature. Why? When looking down the sights of a gun, you can’t see whether the bolt has locked open or not. Which means you don’t know that it’s empty until you pull the trigger and nothing happens. Which means you automatically miss a shot, and then have to reload before you can try again, giving the other guy a much larger opening.

If you count your rounds, however, then you know you need to reload before your weapon fails to fire. If you reload when there’s one left, then you still have a round in the weapon and can fire upon anyone who perceives your reload as an opportunity to attack. And, if you miscount, then the bolt locks open and you’re no worse off than you were just emptying the thing.

Basically, larger magazines give an advantage to people who don’t have enough time to practice reloading drills. Psychopaths and criminals have plenty of incentive to practice. Average citizens with real jobs do not. Limiting magazine sizes gives the advantage to criminals even before you consider that criminals will have no qualms about violating the law and bringing a bigger magazine.

Yes, the military teaches to empty the magazine. Their tactics are squad-based and rely on having buddies to cover you while you reload. Civilians don’t have that luxury. Using military tactics solo is a good way to get ki

  • Hutch1200: The Colts are the ones without the topstrap. They rely on the center-pin of the cylinder to hold the gun together when fired. Remington introduced the modern revolver frame, and it became immediately popular. While Remingtons are rather more prone to “fouling out” and jamming if you load and fire the same cylinder repeatedly, the solid frame design allows for the rapid switching of spent cylinders for freshly loaded ones, allowing rapid reloading nearly on a par with modern semi-automatics. (Cylinders are considerably heavier than magazines however.)

Interestingly enough, Colt Dragoons such as the one pictured were the most powerful mass-produced, repeating handgun in the world from 1849 until the introduction of the .357 magnum. And the .357 doesn’t beat it by all that much energy-wise. The Dragoon throws roughly as much power down range as a .357 with a 4″ barrel.

Personally I have a replica 3rd model which is great for target shooting. The sights aren’t worth beans since the halves of the gun shift every time it’s fired, but for point-shooting it hits where you expect it to.

If you find yourself carrying cap-and-ball for self-defence, I recommend plastic cap-gun caps. They seal tightly enough to withstand even limited submersion in water. Prime the nipples with a bit of 4f for reliability however as quality control on children’s toys isn’t always the best, and don’t expect rapid reloads as they tend to melt in place and need extra time

  • Slow you down? Yes.

Slow you down enough to not go “splat”? Nope.

  • Forget the “New York Reload”. The fastest rapid-fire pistol shootist in the world uses a revolver because a semi-auto doesn’t cycle fast enough. Speed loaders on a swing-action revolver are almost as fast as a semi-auto magazine change with a bit of practice.

Swapping cylinders with a single-action army is pretty darn quick too.

  • Actually, house-to-house searches are exactly what they’ve proposed here in Washington State…

The goal is to enforce the disarmament slowly enough that people are afraid to take the risk of opposing them.

  • Which is where the bit about varieties of ammunition comes into play. If you need maximum flexibility, a shotgun is not a bad choice. You can get rounds for it that vary from self-stabilizing slugs that will shoot a 1″ group at 100 yards, to flechettes that will penetrate soft armour, but not sheetrock, to bean-bags if you want a less lethal option available.

Of course, you still need another weapon to be able to decently reach out beyond about 100 yards. A rifle with safety slugs is another good choice for accuracy and stopping power combined with not over-penetrating the target.

  • KeatonC333: Considering that the majority of crimes in this nation are committed by someone the victim knows, how is it racist to suggest that this woman isn’t afraid of the local criminals because she knows/raised them?

It’s not racism, it’s the typical “It won’t happen to me” mentality that people fall into to hide from their fear.

  • The American Catholic Church has long-since been co-opted by the socialist movement. You will also find them promoting “social justice”; which is code for “tax the rich to give to the poor.”

Too many Christians forget that when Jesus was sending his followers out into the world, he told them that a sword was more important than a cloak. You can’t spread the gospel if you’re murdered by thieves alongside the road.

  • Why do I get the feeling that the real reason “safety minded” people want to ban guns is because they think we’re all as reckless and irresponsible as Joe Biden?

From the advice he gives he shouldn’t be trusted with anything more potent than an old-fashioned cork-gun.
