  You’re right. It’s called “information literacy.” It’s funny when kids think fake news sites (like The Onion) are real. Many young kids (and college kids) have no sense of how to check information for credibility and trustworthiness. This is one area where schools and universities are failing. Op-eds parade as “news” like the Huffington Post. Any person can write for them regardless of their credibility or background.

  How many US couples are dealing with infertility and are trying desperately to get pregnant? Adoption is a much better option. I know of couples who have gone to foreign countries (like China) to adopt because the process is too expensive and too lengthy/hard in the US. My question is why didn’t this interviewer ask these women the hard questions about what they were thinking while they saw these procedures (how they justified being a part of this at all.) At what point (if at all) did they realize that this was wrong? This story is so disgusting. I have no words for it.

  Did anyone watch 60 minutes last night? They detailed the SEAL team 6 rescue of two aid workers captured in Somalia….we can scramble our elite military forces to save aid workers (when necessary). It seems like some people get helped and some are simply left to die. Something is amiss. I’m not saying that the Benghazi folks lives were any more important than aid workers, but there seems to be some “selective saving” going on.   If any of you get a chance– order Lisa Ling’s (National Geographic) special on female suicide bombers. It shows many homes in Palestine where kids have their walls plastered with posters of “martyrs.” The “martyrs” are like rock stars there. The special has several interviews of mothers who bluntly express the hope that their son or daughter will die as a “martyr.” Very disturbing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsZtBu5yiHY

  The problem is– even if this kid went to the principal to complain about the teacher not teaching, the school probably wouldn’t do anything about it. I played cards in physical science all freshman year of HS and ended up with an A. In my college years I contacted the teacher to see why he refused to teach and his answer was “because I didn’t agree with the curriculum.” Sad.

  I have to agree with you. I’m a college professor and I try my best to keep my opinion out of the classroom. I simply ask questions to get the students thinking, not to lead them to what I believe is the correct answer. Try to present both sides of every argument. I always tell them “I can’t grade you based on your opinion, but I can grade how well you form your written argument.” Unfortunately, many professors have no problem teaching their political views without any opposing viewpoints added in the mix. I saw a college English 101 textbook– Read, Reason, Write written by Dorothy Seyler (Columbia alumni– go figure) that is slanted entirely left. Nearly all the readings included in the text are op-eds from the Washington Post. Anti Glenn Beck articles are also included in the text (with post-reading questions that lead students towards negative answers.) Very sad.
