  same reason fools build homes at the end of runways, next to freeways
  then, more fools buy them..and then complain about the noise, or that a plane careens off the runway, etc.
  Many of these places are built in the middle of nowhere, next thing you know, they are surrounded by homes,
  and are being pressured to shut down, take noise abatement actions, traffic complaints, on and on
  I took flying lessons, and did touch and goes at an airport that was there since WWII
  and there were homes right at the end of the runway and a big X on each end of the runway.
  you had to make sure you did not descend until past the X for noise abatement.
  Sadly, due to continued pressure from encroaching homes, this air center was bulldozed under.
  you really want to buy a house near a place mixing toxic chemicals, or wake up every morning staring down all four barrels of a 747 and washing the unburned Jet A off your vehicles.
