The book “Black Like Me” was one of the most thought provoking books I have ever read [probably college before 1974]. A couple of other references have been made to the book in the comments. The book is still available but this is interesting: http://www.favorite-banned-books.com/black-like-me.html

Democrats Claim GOP Conspiracy: Showing Photo ID at Polls Keeps Poor, Minorities From Voting
July 16, 2011 at 3:42am
Colorado Secretary of State Gessler recently commented that Mexico (the country) requires photo identification for voters. He has identified possible discrepancies between drivers licenses with a “noncitizen” box marked but same or similar names appear on voter rolls. There are some indications that voter turnout may be higher with voter ID requirements because of better confidence in the system. The argument that the photo ID is unrealistic and an undue expense seems specious when many, if not all, of “those poor people” will need similar ID to be processed for other state and federal government programs.
