  King Alfred Champions Christianity in ninth-century England

  He is a sensualist and wants all the wine, riches, marble, gold, food and women that he can take. He mocks Christianity
  And even though the monks suffer in rain and snow, their hearts are aflame while the Danes “go clothed in feasts and flames, when all is ice within.”
  The Christians are willing to keep fighting until death, but the pagans don‘t have the heart to fight even though they’re winning.
  The Danes seek solace in their conquering and the pleasures of the world, but their songs reveal their hate, sadness, uncertainty and emptiness.
  Even though they are being repeatedly defeated, the Christians fight with more will, joy, hope and determination than the Danes because the Christians know WHY they fight.
  They seek an eternal reward and are confident that Christ has overcome the world.

  This paradox of Christian joy, that they can be joyful even amidst suffering and have confidence even in defeat, is Alfred’s proof of the failure of paganism and the superiority of Christianity.
