  • KAYDEEBEAU, the whole idea that autism is caused by “refrigerator mothers” (aka bad parenting) was debunked a LONG time ago. I have two autistic sons & I do not spoil them, they have consequences. My younger son with autism has been autistic since the day he was born, he could never stand to be touched, make eye contact. In my sons’ case, their doctor believes it is genetics, but so far only a handful of genes have been associated with autism, mostly with diagnoses that are frequently comorbid with autism, such as Fragile X. Maybe you should donate to find the cause of autism, so we can all find out why it is on the rise. Did you know the rate of autism among military dependents is greater than the general population? 1 in 88 military dependents is diagnosed with autism, but for the general population it is still quoted at 1 in 110. As for food allergies, many of our foods are now genetically modified. Did you know that in the US corn is in almost everything you consume from the water you drink (the filtration process) to the fruits/veggies (the wash, the wax covering) to the meat (the wash, the preservatives to make it look pretty on the shelf)? It all contains corn, & over 85% of corn in the US is genetically modified. I’m sure there are many factors that have caused an increase in food allergies, ADD/ADHD, asthma, & autism. In Bulgaria, little processed food is readily available and the incidence of food allergies is much lower. Just a thought.

  • My autistic sons have never attacked another student, but more than once they have been attacked (once by an adult, she left bruises on him, all because he was crying), they have been bullied, bit, slapped. So why should my sons be attacked by other ignorant people simply because they are autistic? They shouldn’t. You insinuate that all children with autism are aggressive and that is not true at all. It is the exception not the rule. Autistic children are often the target of bullies, not the other way around.

  • I’ve been in a situation like this. My 4 year old autistic son was assaulted by a doctor- she picked him up, shook him, then threw him on the floor. My husband was deployed to Afghanistan and I was by myself with three children- 1 infant and two autistic little boys. Let me tell you, I wanted so badly to hit the woman, but I did not. Why? Because I am a parent first. I walked out of there with my sons. I later reported her. She was reported to CPS by my son’s psychiatrist and our behavioral therapist (but CPS would not do anything because a doctor is not a main caregiver) and the patient advocate at her place of business. It took a year, but she was fired- to this day, we will not go back to that clinic. In hindsight, I should have tried filing a police report to see if they would do a criminal investigation, but at the time, it was all I could do to leave without hitting her. I can guarantee you if a parent hit a teacher or a doctor, even if they had assaulted or abused their child, it would be the parent in trouble- and what good would that do your child. My children are my world and I would do anything for them, I will not go to jail for hitting someone who has hurt them, because they need me way more than they need me to hit someone. Kudos to Sandra for keeping calm enough to not hit the aide.
