  Wait a minute. I never heard Longoria say (in this video clip) that Mexico was occupied by the U.S. She never said WHO occupied them — she just said Mexico was occupied. And that is true; Mexico was “occupied” by the Spanish. Why are we assuming she meant otherwise?

  The problem with many of these ultrasound laws is that they are mandating not just an abdominal ultrasound but a trans-******* ultrasound, which is a highly invasive procedure. I am staunchly pro-life, but I don’t think the government needs to mandate procedures that involve poking lubricated, condom-wrapped probes into women’s vaginas. That abortion is equally invasive is irrelevant; what is relevant is who is making the demand, and for what reason.

  It is true that an ultrasound should be performed prior to any abortion to determine the gestational age of the baby and to rule out an ectopic pregnancy. It is also true that in cases of very early pregnancy, a trans-******* ultrasound may be necessary. But that decision should be made by the abortionist. For the government to demand a trans-******* ultrasound solely or primarily for the purpose of getting a good picture for the mother is simply going to far.

  If the government wants all women seeking an abortion to be allowed to see their ultrasound is a good thing. There are reports of abortionists refusing to allow this, or charging a woman who wants to see the baby on the ultrasound and extra $25. There seems to be no good reason why the authors of these bills cannot write them in such a way as to make this clear, without demanding that the government decide which kind of ultrasound is performed.

  Re/ the banner photo of a seated man holding a gun with his finger on the trigger: that is NOT the way to hold a gun. Your finger rests on the side of the gun above the trigger/trigger guard until you are ready to shoot. This is how accidental shootings happen. Somebody needs some training.

  According to persons identifying themselves as witnesses to the original event, this woman did not just present herself for Communion. She brought her “partner” into the sacristy with her before Mass and made sure the priest understood the exact nature of their relationship. She essentially dared him not to give her Communion. She rubbed his nose in it, and in front of witnesses. She created a scandal at her own mother’s funeral, so apparently none of this was about her dear departed mother. It was all about her and her agenda.

  Here’s a better response: handle it the way most good administrators would, and don‘t take ANYBODY’S side until an investigation has been completed. There is no need to suspend a priest over something like this — the allegation did not involve anyone’s safety. He wasn’t accused of molesting anyone. He could be re-assigned to other duties during the investigation. Instead, before all the facts could possible have been collected, an apology was made. Disgraceful.

  There is a lot of prejudice and insensitivity toward the wrong-way driver here, and only because she was 69 years old. People with no facts beyond that are calling her a “demented old hag,“ ”out of her mind,“ ”geezer,” etc. Where is logic? Where is reason? Where is decency and respect? People who would never use a racial slur don’t mind calling someone a geezer.

  The truth is that elderly drivers account for a small fraction of serious accidents; many more of them are caused by young people, who as insurance agents can attest, are the worst drivers if rated by accidents and citations.

  Demented old hag? Out of her mind? You guys should not be voting or serving on juries, because you can’t even take one step without jumping to conclusions.

  If the wrong-way driver had been a 30-year old guy, would you have assumed he was demented or out of his mind? Maybe there is a problem with the interstate design. Maybe she was from out of town and the darkness, unfamiliarity, and poor design made her confused. Maybe a sign was down, or turned the wrong way. Or maybe there were too many signs, and that caused the confusion. There are many possible reasons for this accident, and we may never know the answer. Don‘t blame someone when you don’t know all the facts.

  A person who thinks people need driver re-testing at 50 is probably 20, and among the highest-risk drivers of any category.

  You are jumping to conclusions. This may have had little or nothing to do with the woman’s age. I once almost pulled onto the wrong side of a divided highway when I was 21. It was pitch dark, poorly marked, and unfamiliar territory for me. Decades later, I’ve never had an accident or received a citation. It can happen to anyone. Notice that she was driving on the right side of the road, indicating she may have thought she was on a two-lane highway. There is a poorly-designed expressway ramp near my home that is notorious for confusing out-of-towners as to which is the entrance and which is the exit, especially when the lights are out (which they usually are, these days).

  The truth is that elderly drivers account for a small fraction of all accidents, and they are usually minor ones. Young people are far more likely to speed, drive recklessly, drive under the influence or sleep-deprived, and drive distracted by cell phones and other occupants. That’s why their insurance rates are so high and so many more of them are killed in accidents every year.
