  • What Does Science Say About the Three Second Rule?

    May 4, 2012 at 12:38am

    In reply to Chrison.

@chrison: If it was funded by a government, at least it wasn’t ours! (Daily Mail, Australian Broadcasting Corp.)

  • I was quite familiar with this case-am a long time Arizonan. If Grant Kuenzli’s mental instability had been allowed to be introduced, I think this trial might have ended more favorably for the defendant.
Defendant: respected member of the community, retired teacher.
Victim: highly intelligent loner, unstable, pleasant to be with as long as you didn’t push his buttons! Limited social skills.
Scene: two people walking in the forest encounter, defendant alone, victim walking with two large dogs. Defendant felt threatened by dogs; stated victim ran toward him screaming threats-unarmed victim shot by defendant.
Witnesses: none except dogs, who presumably weren’t talking.
Result: defendant got maybe 10 yrs for manslaughter; Arizona got ‘stand your ground law’ as a direct result of this case.
Thoughts: introduction of Kuenzli’s background most likely would have gotten Fish off, or at least a reduced sentence.

  • WOW! Glenn, is this our new ‘George Washington’?

  • @think_first: Yours is the most sensible post I’ve seen so far in response to the article here. I live in the State with more Indian Reservations than any other, and spent most of my adult life working with people from different Native American cultures and I think first of all we really need to know the whole story before rendering judgement. Did the reporter make any attempt to find out what kind of reputation does this teacher have? What about the girl? Did Ms.Morgenstern interview staff members? Other students? Parents? I have worked in the past with people who become extremely incensed when a language they don’t understand is spoken in their presence; I’ve also seen (especially with middle school students) use their native language used as a means for defying authority. If the former is the case then this teacher has no business in a multicultural classroom, if the latter then the student needs to be called to account for her behavior. More than likely, the teacher was just having a rough day and over-reacted; but having said that why didn’t the administrative staff intervene to cool things off instead of meting out punishment? Maybe the teacher should be required to apologize to the girl in front of the class, and privately to the family. Native American students WERE punished severely for speaking their native tongue in BIA schools (probably in parochial schools also) until at least the ’60s, so this must be a painful reminder to the family. No kudos to the Blaze

  • @yoneh, If you go to youtube you can find video of the violence including the gun held against the dress of the girl who was with the young guy who was killed by Hells Angels. I also want to say The Rolling Stones, whose music I’ve always enjoyed did an extremely brave thing by NOT fleeing the scene, but kept on playing between attempts to calm down the crowd. I also found where the Angel’s were paid in beer for acting as security guards for a concert with 300,000 stoned fans; only a miracle this didn’t turn into a riot with many more dead and injured.

  • Very true, academica2020. I think Glenn finally remembered to get back to what he does best, educate us! Now that many of us have voiced our opinions on him straying from the path, he probably realized that most of his audience, (myself included) get our political commentary from those who do it best. Hannity, Limbaugh, O’Reilly, et. al. Could this be beginning of a deeper immersion into how we changed from the 1950‘s culture to the truly evil parts of the 60’s? Let’s stay tuned in.

  • @car54, after reading quite a few posts I feel you got it just right. Having come of age in the 60′s (even though I never got involved with ‘flower power’ nor did I participate in anything that came afterward, what Glenn said on the radio today feels right. ) I‘ll bet Don McClain might have been reacting to old school buses or VW’s decorated during drug inspired episodes of labor; signs in the windshield stating: @$$, gas, or grass if you wanted a ride! I’m sure those of you who were also around during those times in other parts of the country saw similar sights, but California is always where stuff likes this starts.
