  • continued,

What you experienced is not the standard across the country. I am sure that horrible conditions exist in all city run agencies, however, as I mentioned previously, location and budget do make a huge difference.

  • @FIREMANFRANK

First of all my wife is a telecommunications officer here in Texas, who dispatches Fire, Police, Animal Control and Emergency Units, so yes, I do know first hand of what I speak. My wife has on numerous occasions, arranged private tours of both our local police and fire departments and I must say that the working conditions of the firehouse I have attended were in immaculate shape.

Now I don’t doubt the conditions you mentioned do not exist, however, from the tours I have taken with my wife and sons, I did not witness those conditions. I have never once tried to belittle, demean or state that firefighters don’t do anything all day except sleep, what I was referring to was that as a firefighter, you do have downtime as opposed to being mandated to a chair for 24 hours.

Firefighters have options, dispatchers do not. My wife’s department does not get scheduled lunch hours or breaks during their shift, they do however eat during the lulls that do occur between calls, but then again, those can be far and few between.

This in no way excuses the 911 operator’s behavior for falling asleep on the job. I can just sympathize with how difficult a 24 hour shift is on the operator based on how exhausted my wife is when she comes home from a 12 hour shift.

I am sure the location and budget allocated are major factors. Comparing a fire company in an inner city or busy metropolis to a suburb or rural area is like comparing apples to oranges.

  • Firefighters prefer 24 hour shifts because they get to sleep in nice sleeping quarters between calls, dispatchers sit in uncomfortable chairs with headsets attached and stare at computer screens their entire shifts. Bathroom breaks and time to eat/stretch to stay awake are a luxuries that are hard to come by on even a 12 hour shift. They are utterly exhausted at the end of those 12 hours.

The fact that dispatchers are mandated to stay awake 24 hours to make the firefighters happy is ridiculous! It is not only unsafe for the citizens to have a dispatcher that is overtired/overworked on the other side of the phone line but it is unsafe for the dispatcher that has to drive home after the shift.

Suffice to say a maximum 12 hour shift for the dispatchers only should be implemented immediately.

  • Romney Gets Heat for Hiring Gay Spokesman

    8. How will Romney be expected to appoint conservative judges if elected president when as governor he passed over Republican lawyers for three quarters of the 36 judicial vacancies he faced and nominated 2 open homosexuals?

    9. How can Romney claim to stand for religious liberty and freedom of conscience when he supports passage of state level Employment Non-Discrimination Act which would force churches and other religious organizations to hire homosexuals and transvestites or face criminal fines and prosecution?

    10. How can Romney claim to be a man of virtue and integrity when he consistently tells so many outright and easily disprovable lies?

  • Romney Gets Heat for Hiring Gay Spokesman

Here are a few positions Mitt Romney has taken which haven’t been discussed openly. This is what I call, “How Can Romney Be A Conservative:

    1. How can Romney be “pro-life” when 3 years after his supposed “pro-life conversion” he signed $50 abortions into law as part of his socialist healthcare plan that was endorsed by Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, and Planned Parenthood?

    2. How can Romney be “pro-marriage” when he is unilaterally responsible for the illegal and unconstitutional implementation of same-sex “marriage” in Massachusetts?

    3. How can Romney be “pro-family” when he boosted funding for homosexual and transgender “education” starting in kindergarten?

    4. How can Romney be “pro-family” when he opposes a ban on homosexual scoutmasters?

    5. How can Romney oppose the gay agenda when he promised the homosexual Log Cabin Republicans he would not oppose “gay marriage” in return for their endorsement?

    6. How can Romney claim to oppose ObamaCare when Romney himself signed the forerunner for ObamaCare (Romneycare which includes $50 tax subsidized abortions) into law which has been a total failure?

    7. How can Romney claim to be “pro-tax cuts” and “pro-limited government” when as governor he opposed the Bush Tax Cuts (for which he was lauded by Barney Frank) and raised taxes and fees by a billion dollars which has decimated the Massachusetts economy?

  • A Starbucks establishment attacked by the very people it supports… how very liberal.

Tompkins Square Park is the armpit of the city. A collection of everything nauseating and disgusting goes there, again how very liberal. I worked for the city in the 80′s managing my own crew who went to assigned parks to pick up the trash. My APSW (associate park service worker) who drove the garbage truck along with the several CPW’s (city park workers) who actually handled the trash were reduced to tears when we were assigned Tompkins Square Park.

Without fail we witnessed drug sales, drug use, prostitution, fornication, deification in the park whenever we were assigned Tompkins Square Park. The bandstand was treated like a hotel with the countless of homeless living and sleeping there. The ground was riddled with vials and needles from drug use.

Everyone was aware of what was going on in the park however no one did anything about it. It was a decision made by the higher ups to ignore what we saw and go about our business.

Thank God we moved out of New York.

  • Ann, how far have we fallen. You do realize that your word has become worthless and your books sales will be close to nonexistent.

Mr. Jon McNaughton’s paintings has been around long before Obama took office. He’s been painting for many, many years. If you look at his previous work, you will have an indication about who he is and what he believes. In fact, I actually have that exact same painting (The Forgotten Man) hanging on the wall in my den going on two years now.

You have liberal artist, atheist artist, progressive artist and trendy artist all attacking the flag, our morals, values and our belief in almighty God, either through paintings or exhibits on a regular basis and you get bent out of shape over a true depiction of the current president on canvas?

An old adage comes to mind, “The Truth Hurts”… deal with it!
