  There are two reasons “zero tolerance” is used by many companies.

  1. There has been successful litigation against employers for neglect to provide a safe work environment when there has been violence in the workplace. Think crazy employee with a gun.

  2. Drug users are in the work force. No employer wants a drug user working under the influence because of damage to people and property. Zero tolerance means you can fire them on the first instance. Remember the photos last year of the union guys drinking and smoking dope in a parking lot during their lunch hour. Zero tolerance lets an employer get rid of this unsafe trash.

  However, I would not have called what this gentleman did as violence in the workplace or failure to follow policies or procedures. He had the best interest of the customer and employer at heart. His quick action could have provided Safeway with some great positive PR. The store manager and human resource person screwed the pooch on this one.

  I lived in Washington State beginning in 1963. We used to go backpacking and scare the s**t out of each other with stories about Big Foot and his cousin, the Wendigo. Don’t solve the mystery. People have too much fun with it.

  She may have a case with the overtime pay. Under the provisions of the Wage and Hour Act, travel time is counted toward hours worked for the purpose of computing overtime as long as she was doing her job of tending the kids.

  The rest of the stuff sounds phoney. Unless there were witnesses, it is just she said/she said.

  The leadership of UAFS needs to grow a pair of those things that this guy apparently still retains. They made reasonable accomodation. They should have taken the suit. I dealt with this twice in my career in Human Resources. Difficult but not impossible to manage.

  I am in the group of parents who believes all slogan t-shirts should be banned. If one is allowed any can be allowed. I would not want my grandchild exposed to a t-shirt that says “Jesus is a myth”. Further, I believe sloganed t-shirts contribute to the “gang” ethos.

  I don’t know how you got the impression that I am part of a group who gives slack to non-hackers. That’s simply not true. Neither of the soldiers I wrote about were non-hackers. Anyone who intentionally exposes themselves to incoming to save another is definitely not a non-hacker. MSG Johnson volunteered for an extended tour and taught me well.

  The point I was trying to make is that it is foolish to dismiss the training and performance of black soldiers. I have two good examples of trained soldiers. My experiences in the Army is different than most. I commanded a Military Intelligence Detachment. To be in Military Intelligence, a soldier had to have an ASVAB test score higher than OCS candidates.

  BTW, I am 3rd generation Army. I lived on post growing up. My son is 4th generation. His problem soldiers tend to be Latino.
