The final push culminated in the defeat at Mexico City, which then led to negotiations and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In all Mexico had control of Texas and the rest of the Southwest region for less than two decades. And truth be told the US government paid Mexico restitution for the establishment of the permanent border at the Rio Grande river.
