  • The LEEDS standard has had a problem from the beginning in that there many examples of buildings built to their standard that actually use MORE energy to operate than those built simply to customary standards. The problem they have is that its an artificial system that assigns value to things that in themselves have nothing to do with energy efficiency (bike racks) and more to do with social engineering to hopefully attain it- ie… If you have bike racks, people will have some place to put them during the day, therefore more people will ride bikes to work and customers will ride to your business.
Thus -wishful thinking trumps proven performance. Many of today’s energy saving systems ranging from high insulation value windows and walls to high efficiency heating and cooling systems can show proven returns on investment to customers that are already using them. Unfortunately, many of the things Leeds places weighted value on are simple PC “feel good ” items. Design your building using Low – E glass with non-aluminum window frames, a highly insulated building envelope and utilize infloor heating/cooling with seperate air to air heat exchangers to assure indoor air quality augmented by air to water heat pumps using a condensing boiler backup and you have a system that will pay for the extra upfront cost in no time. The bulk of what LEEDS pushes is like the promise of the electric car – just promises. The proof is in whats not on the the utility bill at the end of the month.

  • I‘ve noticed that they haven’t hacked the main mosque in Iran or Saudi Arabia yet – I wonder why? Perhaps because it‘s easier for them to pick on those they know won’t behead them on their own beloved internet.

  • This is only the beginning. This is what The First Lady wants to expand on. This is the Society they want to build. This is our future. The first question is, how far will WE let them go, before we say -enough! The next question is, by the time we wake up enough to say it, will it carry any weight. The people of North Carolina should hold their public representatives feet to the fire over this one and demand that this kind of authority be stripped from those who would abuse it. The power of the ballot is the only real power there is at this point – make sure they know it will be used.

  • It may behoove the radicals in Iran who think that asymmetric warfare is a act for which they will not be held accountable by the current administration to remember they will be killing the sons and daughters of people how may posses the technical skills and knowledge to exact vengeance on a nano-genetic scale with DNA guided precision – without the aid or consent of the government. It could be that they may be unwittingly charting the course for the end of their own civilization by such acts. Just a friendly observation.

  • Wolves are hardly necessary, they are only one of many natural predators for large game species, to include humans. Their removal from the ecosystem resulted in no reduction in other species due to their absence, quite the contrary, the coyote, bobcat, mountain lion and bear populations have all increased to fill in. The difference is that the others mentioned above, although they do attack humans on rare occasions, do so as lone animals, not as part of a highly organized pack. Don’t dismiss out of hand that such attacks by wolves could never happen again simply because they are so few. We are starting to see coyotes become aggressive as they become accustomed to humans through contact in urban environments and have lost their fear. Wolves are fantastically adaptable creatures, and as their number increase and they take back territories from the coyotes, they too may find they have nothing to fear from that thing on the bicycle path.
Hmmm thinks the wolf – no fangs, no claws, no fur – I wonder what one tastes like?

  • Most wild wolves were wiped out by the 1960s, so it’s not surprising that there were no wolf attacks from then till now. Before the 1960s, man did not inhabit nearly as much of their habitat as we do now, so interaction was minimal. The idea that wolves in a pack won’t hunt and kill humans is a fallacy- they will, if previous experience or lack thereof has not taught them to be wary. The wolf ‘s reputation as blood thirsty is highly exaggerated and most with any knowledge of humans are timid in there presence, but that doesn‘t mean a pack of them that has no prior human contact due to the remoteness of there range wouldn’t pose a mortal threat if they decided to kill you. I gather from the movie‘s trailer that it’s set in the extreme remote wilderness after a plane crash – its not plausible but it is possible, say in Siberia or the upper Canadian or Alaskan wilderness.

  • You have got to be kidding, right.
The ideas of socialism and communism have failed in every place they have been tried for any length of time. I give you a Europe who‘s common currency is on the brink of collapse as we speak due to the unsustainable socialist policy’s adopted by it’s members. I give you the island of Cuba, who‘s populous is driving around in 150s era cars because in 60 years they couldn’t manage to pull together enough knowledge to manufacture a single domestic design for their people to drive. I give you North Korea, who have people drop dead from starvation in the streets of their city’s and are left on the sidewalk because all of the resources are allocated to the Army, and their only trick is to threaten war, then negotiate a price in oil and food to be paid for them to go away till next time

  • This model was a bit of a cold war gas hog, but the wing in ground effect concept for heavy lift open ocean transport is an raw, unconventional but game changing technology. The ability to lift hundreds of tons of troops and equipment and move them at hundreds of miles per hour at the same or less fuel/weight ratio as an everyday cargo ship is a stunning leap forward in capability. If enough power and lift could be Incorporated to fly out of ground effect for several hundred miles after an open ocean voyage that was done under the radar, it would enable a few of these thing to drop off an entire airborne brigade in an enemies back yard before he could react in any meaningfully way. This is one of those unconventional, out of the box ideas that can change history if developed correctly, which we should be doing. Think back to 1914 and the tank. Better yet, think Iran and how a few of these would allow us to fly strait out of the gulf under their radar and over the desert deep into their territory, raising bloody Cain with their command and control structure and coming in from behind all those “sunburn” missile launch platforms pointed out at the Straits of Hormuz.

  • Please stop with the mustang nostalgia. The P-51 was proven NOT a good ground attack aircraft because one bullet through the belly mounted radiator would bring it down due to coolant loss. They did hit ground targets of opportunities on their way back from escort missions, but they were not used in WWII in this role except when pressed because of their vulnerability to ground fire. This lesson had to be relearned in Korea when they were used for ground attack and their vulnerability to ground fire was again exposed. They were great HIGH ALTITUDE escort aircraft with the range with drop tanks to make it to Berlin, but the underpowered P-39 Bell Air Cobra and air cooled P-47 Thunderbolt were much better ground attack aircraft.
