  • is he talking about the same kind of “oh my god the ice caps are melting! the cute cuddly polar bear are going to drive hybrid to the city and kill those who rely on oil! we are all going to diiiiiiiiie!” you mean that kind of fear mongering?
i’m more frightened of the group who thinks that a depiction of a child in a noose on an iceberg is alright. or those who think blowing up global warming naysayers is a swell idea. Those people are causing more fear. Kind of a “join or die” mentality, eh? Similar to the one they accuse the tea party of propogating.

  • “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

People are blasting Christine O’Donnell for talking about how the constitution does not specifically talk about separation of church and state. The above is the text of the 1st Amendment. Like some history buffs will no doubt know..the phrasing separation of church and state was written by Thomas Jefferson in 1802 as a response to the Danbury Baptist Association’s fear that they would lose their religion to a majority (see…at this point, the 1st amendment only applied at the Federal level, not the State). The actual text of Jefferson’s comment is, “”…I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.”

The constitution does not bar the church and state from acting together. It does not limit the students from praying in a classroom. It does prohibit the teachers from forcing their religious views on the students. For example, teachers forcing children to try out praying to Allah. At Jefferson’s time there was not a worry about Muslims or other religions. The worry was about the various Christian factions. The Baptists wanted to make sure they would be able to practice their faith, and not be Federally forced to be, say, Anglican or Presbyterian. This nation was founded as a Christian nation, that is why Jefferson did not say “…building a wall between Church or Mosque or Temple and State.”

Thus if we are to follow the letter and spirit of the amendment, students should no longer be suspended for praying at their lunch tables, or for meeting at a flagpole. They should be protected just as the student who celebrates Chanukah, or the student who does freely prostrate on his mat and pray to Allah.

On another tangent, the Ten Commandments in the courtroom is protected under the 1st amendment. There is no law stating that they must be displayed. It is at the discretion of the court if they want them displayed. The only people violating the 1st amendment in this battle (as also in the prayer in schools battle) are the people wanting laws that prohibit the free exercise of religion.

Finally, let’s go to Westbro Baptist Church, those lovely people who protest soldier’s funerals. Since this is related to the 1st amendment as well. I would say they are not protected under the free speech clause. It depends on your definition of “peaceful”. Their intent appears to be to cause emotional duress and garner attention to their particular belief that God is killing soldiers because there are gay people around. Their motives are not peaceful. They are maliciously assembling.

Maybe it is just me…but somehow I think We the People have forgotten what the founding fathers actually wrote when they set out to attempt this experiment called America.

  • i blame global warming as well. On a related note…found out today that 95% of my master’s level education class believes that humans are totally responsible for global warming class. Get ready to battle this even more as the indoctrinated teachers start to flood the classroom. I can’t wait to be one of the few who has the balls to teach truth.

  • “tango down.”
    “we got ‘em!”

  • his free speech is better than glenn’s free speech. left is always right and just, it’s the evil twistings of the right that should be censored. (please all, note sarcasm)

  • Who cares? I’d applaud someone who had the stones to actually speak what a large number of Americans feel. Anyone who wants to have trials for terrorists (rather than just public executions) much less in New York, well….F@$% them.

  • STOP CREATING LAWS FROM THE BENCH! Holy crap, how is this ok? Has anyone checked what the actual job of the judicial branch is!? You are there to interpret and enforce laws, not to just totally fabricate them. This is not an interpretation, this is just blatant fabrication. How much you want to bet the closest Judge Phillips has been to combat was when one of her friends told her about their trip to the theater to watch Saving Private Ryan?

  • You are correct about the right. It’d be much better to just let the left just take private property away. Wait..that’s not it either.
(full disclosure: I’m not a “bible-beating” anything, nor am I even a proponent of organized religion at all.)
I’d be brought up on charges if I created a picture of Allah or Mohammed bending over and taking it. Substitute Jesus and it is suddenly “art” or “free expression”. That’s the point.
If for some reason you still believe in the notion of “private property” or any sort of “privacy” at all…it seems you may not be paying attention to current events or the government.

  • Amen. I commend this woman…after all, she was merely exercising her rights as the painter claims he was. If you have not seen this picture…it is outrageously offensive and just another example of the Christian persecution that is continuing in the face of Muslim oppression. They are allowed to blow up towers and kill innocents for their beliefs while any Christian objection to Jesus receiving oral sex from a man or the virgin Mary covered in feces is portrayed as religious fanaticism and bigotry. One nation under God indeed.

  • i could swear that he has made that same comment before. i had no problem with it then, nor do i have a problem now. i feel that it is a very accurate statement. prez barry = jackass. no arguement here.
