  • Henry, prohibition gave organized crime a foothold, a beachfront if you will. When it was repealed they didn’t become law abiding citizens. They simply turned to other forms of crime. The Mafia families profited and became very strong because of prohibition. After that times got tough for them, families started fighting more, the field narrowed, alliances were made, and organized crime continued through robbery, black-market trading, kickbacks for politicians, and eventually… drugs.

Very similarly, these cartels have consolidated a TON of power though the illegal drug trade. Making the drugs legal will hurt them, but it won’t get rid of them. As with the end of prohibition, they will simply choose some other crime and attempt to profit from it.

It isn’t that they are choosing to be “bad” they are choosing to make a profit the easiest way they can– crime. Because, despite the popular saying, crime does pay… for those at the top. For the foot soldiers of the mafia family or the cartel (same thing, imo) it doesn’t pay, it kills you.

  • For everyone talking about government spending… do a bit of research, BAE is a Global weapons company which if it had a national tie it would be to England as the company was British prior to going global. They produce weapons and sell them to various nations, this is not the same as a company making something for the US Military like the F22 or the M1– those are designed in conjunction with the military and kept quiet until put into the field or at least in field testing.

  • Texas = Nanny state now? Don’t think so. Do you, or have you ever worked at a school? Because I have, a high school. I had to deal with guys who pierced their ears for 17th and 18th birthdays– not little boys whose mommy had his ear pierced at the mature old age of ONE. This isn’t first amendment at all– schools are well within the law to require uniforms or dress codes as the school districts see fit. Tidy, or well kept hair cuts are normal for dress codes– this business of donating hair is total BS… I’ll bet on it. I doubt the mom has ever donated hair, my sister has and I know other people that have. One’s hair has to be about 8-9 inches in length prior to cutting to donate hair… think that 6 year old is going to want a mop like that on his head? Especially in the heat Texas is experiencing right now?

I am all about rights, free speech, and constitutional fidelity– but don’t feed me this “first amendment” crap… this isn’t about what the boy wants, it is what his mom wants. I’ve dealt with these situations before, you come to recognize the signs.

  • I agree, I read in another article the boy has had his ear pierced for 5 YEARS… which means the BOY WAS ONE YEAR OLD when the mom had his ear pierced… give me a break. The mom wants him to wear the earring and she wants his hair long… this isn’t first amendment stuff, this is “parental rights” stuff… and bull stuff at that. In my opinion, that is.

  • w00t! I can’t wait for Gov. Perry to comment on this… he probably won’t stoop that low, but it’d be great if he did.

  • Not all Jesuits; that is the far left of the order. Don’t forget, while it is the Universal Church there are differing opinions within it. Even within the Jesuits there are varying views on Social Justice. Certainly, there is that view but there are others which are more in line with the tradition (which is from the Jewish tradition) which is that a society or community has an obligation to help (not merely provide for) the needs of the less fortunate. The idea was to lift the poor out of poverty and improve the good of the community by helping that person be a full member of the society contributing his or her gifts back to the whole.

  • Oh come on Kathleen… I know a ton of people that don‘t give a dime at Mass and a few that don’t think twice about skipping the Sunday obligation to sleep in or go fishing– is this welcomed, no. But they aren’t tortured or stopped at the door and told to step in line or suffer in Hell. I also was raised Catholic, rebelled, returned, and chose to study theology and Church teaching to better understand WHY the Church says what it says, why the rules are what they are. I am glad I did and I hope you find what you are looking for. As for me and my house, we will praise the Lord– Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity; in the Eucharist.

  • Perry/Paul 2012? :D
People can say what they want, Perry isn’t dumb and he is a Texan to the core. We need the “straight talk” that McCain promised and we need the transparency Obama promised– NOW is when that hope for change comes in. I hope if QE3 does happen Perry straight up calls the action “treason against the American people.” It is a failed policy, stop beating a dead horse.
