“The M16 and M4 both use gas tubes to launch their projectiles, and keep these gases (along with burned carbon particles) inside the gun, fouling the receiver. The HK416 uses a gas piston instead of a gas tube to launch projectiles” sez Billy Hollowell.
Correction: the gas tube and/or the gas piston does NOT “launch” any projectiles. Their sole purpose in life is to cycle the action of the bolt which ejects the spent cartridge and feeds a new cartridge to the chamber. PERIOD. The cartridge, when struck on its primer by the firing pin, “launches the projectile”
