  • “Athism is just another …..ism and they all have the same ending and it’s not good.”

Is the same true for Catholicism? lol

  • “The radical administration in Washington is attempting to establish atheism as the national civic religion.
This is unconstitutional because our 1st Amendment clearly states that “Congress shall not make any laws respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. If people want to fly airplanes with banners proclaiming their personal beliefs, let them. But, when the director of a veteran’s cemetery forbids prayers with the name of Jesus, that is prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

Actually, I’m an Atheist an I too would oppose Atheism being set as the national religion (an oxymoron since Atheism isn’t a religion). The status qou should remain as it is. NO official religion. That is a great thing about America. We can believe what we wish. Sometimes I feel that a move to correct a federal institution establishing preference one religion over all others is seen as an attack or attempt to assert Atheism when it is really supporting the Constitution for the benefit of all beliefs.

In the example you gave about the memorial, the devil lies in the details. If they had a problem with a federally paid employee directing a sectarian prayer, then there is a point. But if they are stopping visitors from praying as they wish, then they are wholly in the wrong.

    Cheer!

  • “Next thing you know, they’ll want the right to get married!”

I’m a married Atheist. Nonreligious weddings are available and have been for years. :)

  • “OKAY – so you say, “There is NO God” – – and I say, “Some day you will meet him, for ‘every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is God’s Son!” NOW – if you’re right and I am wrong I have nothing to lose…. BUT IF I am right and you are wrong, YOU HAVE EVERYTHING TO LOSE – and that for all eternity!! Not a real wise choice to be athiestic.”

Pascal’s Wager. It would be a good argument if the only options were Atheist or Christian (or whichever religion you wish to insert). First, it implies that religion costs you nothing. But I‘ll skip that since we’re talking odds here. There have been thousands of gods through the years. Most of which aren’t happy with you if you have a different god. So If we are looking only at statistics, both the Atheist and monotheist believer face the same long odds.

    Cheers!

  • When you say that Atheists make up 80% of the prison system are you talking inmates or officers? I‘ll admit that I’ve never seen stats on prison employees in regard to religion. But I have seen stats on inmates that show non-believers to be a miniscule minority.

  • Actually in a literary sense, if you are talking about the Christian God it is still a proper noun. Being real or not doesn’t matter. Do you capitalize Santa, Harry Potter, Captain Ahab or Huckleberry Finn?

  • Just so you know:

    Treaty of Tripoli – 1796

“As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion”

  • I’m an Atheist, and even I think this is a terrible idea. As for the question asked in the article about who‘s saying Atheist’s aren’t patriotic… My initial guess would be that these banners are in response to the absurd “Why do Atheist’s hate America” billboards from last year. But still, the message they’re running is the wrong way to go about it. Truth is, many of us can’t stand David Silverman as president of American Atheists. The billboards AA put up this hast holiday season, ideas like this one and the fact that he interviews horribly are just a few reasons. I can understand wanting to return the pledge and motto back to their original form as to be back in line with what the founders intended, but I feel these airplane adverts will likely get only a lukewarm reception. I’m in favor of an Atheist message on the 4th, but this one simply gives you the feeling of taking the focus away from where it should be, this great country. They should of just put up signs saying “Happy 4th of July from American Atheists”, or maybe a photo of an Atheist veteran with a holiday wish. Both get across the intended message without being in your face about it. Oh, and I must agree with others that said that Atheism (and theism) aren’t in themselves patriotic. However there are certainly patriotic Atheists and theists alike. So my guess is that the message could be that (unlike those aforementioned billboards suggest) Atheism in no way keeps one from being patriotic. Cheers!
