  Black vs white, rich vs poor, now stay-at-home moms vs working moms. When will the divisiveness end? I chose to stay at home when our first child was born 21 years ago. It was not easy financially, but you know what…it was so worth it. Our children are smart, well behaved, and community oriented. As a stay-at-home non I volunteer at our school, church and other community organizations.

  My husband thought the ad was more about Twinkies than Chevy. Our family of 5 all drive Fords and were are very proud of it.

  @Damn the taxes: The climate has been changing since the beginning of time. I’ve said it before…scientists tell me glaciers used to sit where we farm, and now we help feed the world. Was the drought of the 30′s man made? When I was in elementary school in the 70′s, scientists said the earth was headed to another ice age. From an ice age scare to a global warming scare to a climate change scare, all in my lifetime.

  During the 70′s, the big scare was an ice age. I remember reading about it in the Weekly Reader, and worrying about what might happen. Then it was global warming and my kids were reading about that in the Weekly Reader. Now it’s just climate change, like that has never happened before. Let me tell you what climate change does….it melted the glaciers that used sit where we farm, and now we feed the world.

  I have a few responses to his take on farming:
  *Making a living solely based on the farm is hard to do without deep pockets to finance your operation or starting out in a family farm that is already large. We have made investments, and are diversified to bring in extra income. You must be a business person to run a profitable farm operation.
  *It is true that the number of farmers has dwindled over the last few decades, but the same amount of land is being planted. It takes that many more acres for one farm to make a living than it did 20 years ago.
  *It is not easy to quit your job and start farming like he implied. Even if you can find land to rent or own, are you ready to invest $500,000 to $1,000,000 every year? The seed is planted and you pray the rain will come. You harvest the crop and you pray it is a good year. You sell your crop and you pray the government didn’t do something to force the price lower.
  Farming is NOT an easy occupation. Making money at farming is NOT easy either.

  There are two ways to solve this problem: Automatic payment through property taxes or the fire department does large fundraisers. Our rural firedepartment does not recieve money from property taxes, but does two large fundraisers every year. These fundraisers bring in $30,000+ every year.
