  I have to admit I’m kinda suprised by your argument MacPappy. I found God through science. I don’t understand how you can think that believing in God means not still learning the mysteries of this world he created or how or why. I never read in the bible where its says do not learn. Also I believe that if you look at belief in God in general you will see that it was through belief in him that we have abolished slavery, set up a free society and give to others that are in need. Believing in God makes one free from all that this world would use to enslave one. Such as materialism, fear, anger etc. Also….if you would live by the golden rule or the morality that Jesus has laid down then you are saying that you accept in part that it is right. But why is it right? I know God does not make us feel guilt. We do that to each other and honestly to ourselves. I do have a few thoughts of my own so I would hope that you would not disparage someone who believes in God as stupid or mindless as I do not disparage you on what you believe. Thanks for your time :)

  @LETUSREASON- Thank you for clearing up what I believe to be a misguided thought about Mormons. I couldnt have said it any better. I am not Mormon myself but was raised in the church and I know that there are a lot of weird, crazy or just plain dumb ideas out there about what they do or do not believe.

  @KMA- I wish that more athiests could be as wonderfully grounded and reasonable as you are. Thank you! I embrace your decision to not believe in God as you embrace my decision to believe in God. And thats how it should be :)

  I think we both know thats a facetious question so I don’t think we need to go into it, but I do have a question of my own. Do you think he would be the man he is if he hadn’t had ALS? We are shaped by our choices in how we take life. He has capabilities to do and think of so many amazing things. Would he have had the same focus or drive if he had been born without his disease? I do not believe that disease and suffering are things put on us by a distant or cruel God. It is in the midst of tragedy and pain that we become truly human and grow.

  @ JROOK “Your seriously placing a story from a 12 year old against the intellect and experience of Stephen Hawkin. Let‘s for a moment accept the 12 year old’s STORY. Why would there not be countless other people who have had similar encounters. Funny how many here would reject people claiming encounters with aliens as absurd, but a similarly supernatural story from a 12 year old is given equal weight to Stephen Hawkin. OH PLEASE”

  Actually many people have had similiar encounters and I have spoken with 2 people that have had the same experience. One actually died twice and he will tell you about his experience , the change it wrought in his life…..What amazes me are those that are ragging cause the child’s father is a pastor. Most children’s parents would not pay attention or dismiss what they said. The fact that the family has faith in God does not negate his story. I was brought to God through science. Through logic and observation of our world I came to the only logical conclusion that can be reached. I don’t understand why people think that Science and belief in a Creator are somehow mutually exclusive. I think they go hand in hand. :)
