  This was a simple answer.. The Progressives took hold of the Democrat Party before they got hold of the Republican Party. In which case, they were able to change history to show that the Nazis under Hitler were right wing and the Republican party is associated as being right wing. Even though both the Nazis and the Republicans have been shown to be left winged with the democrats.
