Glenn explains Paul Manafort wiretap and why Russia is in the news again

What happened?

CNN reported that former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort has been under FBI surveillance multiple times, both before and after the 2016 election, because of his connections to Russia.

Using the authority of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, the FBI wiretapped Manafort in 2014 as part of an investigation of a group of Washington consulting firms.

How serious is the situation?

If the reports are accurate, Manafort’s shady Russian connections were way too close to President Donald Trump. While Manafort left the campaign in August 2016, he and Trump have stayed in communication. It’s unclear if the FBI swept up any of their calls while surveilling Manafort.

Glenn’s take:

“He was a bad guy and shouldn’t be near any presidential politics,” Glenn said of Manafort. “If these reports are true, that level of corruption so close to the president is seriously disturbing.”
