Parents upset by state-run survey that asks high schoolers about their sexual identity
March 03, 2017
Parents in Bakersfield, California are upset about a survey that went out to their high schoolers about their sexual identity.
They say when the school sent out permission letters in January, it was not clear that LGBT issues would be on the California Department of Education-sponsored “Healthy Kids Survey,” as it was titled.
Survey questions included whether students felt their school was safe for LGBT students and staff and how students would describe their own sexual orientation.
Parents maintain the title was misleading, but administrators say they were transparent. The district says the results of the anonymous survey will be shared on their web site and used to provide better support to students.
